Usually: Nearly always a blockage rather than a failed motor: a clogged sump filter, debris jammed in the drain pump impeller, or a drain hose crushed behind the machine.
On the visit: We bail the machine down, lift the filter and sump, turn the impeller by hand to clear glass chips and label paper, then check the hose run and the sink waste spigot before testing a full drain.
The cycle starts and the machine hums or clicks, but no water goes in and it stalls or throws a fault part way through.
Usually: A seized supply valve, a silted-up inlet gauze, a failed solenoid on the fill valve, or the flood-protection float tripped in the base tray by a slow leak.
On the visit: We check pressure at the supply, clean the gauze, meter the solenoid for continuity and confirm it is being fed, and lift the machine to see whether the base tray has water in it.
Dishes come out with food still baked on, glasses cloudy and grit sitting in upturned cup bases.
Usually: Blocked spray arm jets, an arm that cannot spin freely because the rack is overloaded or the bearing is furred, and scale build-up from an empty salt reservoir in a hard-water area.
On the visit: We take both arms off, clear every jet, check free rotation under load, descale where it is needed and set the machine's water hardness to match what actually comes out of the tap here.
A puddle at the front of the machine or a damp, swelling kickboard, worst on a hot cycle.
Usually: A perished or displaced door seal, a door that has dropped because the hinge cables or springs are worn, or heavy foaming from too much detergent pushing water past the seal.
On the visit: We run a cycle and watch the door, feel the seal for splits and flat spots, test hinge tension, then renew the seal or reset the door so it closes square against the tub.
A code on the display, or a pattern of blinking lights, with the cycle halting before it finishes.
Usually: Codes on a dishwasher point at fill, drain, heat or the flood switch far more often than at a dead control board, and are frequently the machine reporting a blockage correctly.
On the visit: We read the code against that model's own list, then test the circuit it points at rather than swapping parts on a guess, and clear the fault memory once the underlying cause is fixed.
Everything comes out cold and wet, with the detergent tablet still sitting half-dissolved in the dispenser.
Usually: A failed heating element or flow-through heater, an open thermistor reading the tub as already hot, or a low fill level leaving the element uncovered.
On the visit: We meter the element and thermistor cold, watch the fill level and pressure switch on a live cycle, and confirm the machine is actually calling for heat before we condemn anything.
A rattle, grind or drumming noise from a machine built into a run of units with a cupboard door on the front.
Usually: Usually a foreign object in the wash pump, a worn circulation pump bearing, or the fixing brackets and feet gone loose so the tub drums against the worktop and the cabinets either side.
On the visit: We take the decor door off, release the brackets and draw the machine out onto floor protection so it can be worked on properly, then refit it level with the door lined up to the cabinet fronts.
