The cycle finishes but the washing comes out soaked, and the drum never gets up to spin speed.
Usually: On an older brushed motor it is normally worn carbon brushes. On a direct-drive machine it is more often the rotor position sensor or the control board — or a machine that has abandoned the spin because it could not drain or could not balance the load.
On the visit: We confirm the machine is actually draining first, then turn the drum by hand, measure brush length or check the sensor output, and replace whichever part is genuinely at fault rather than the one that is easiest to reach.
Water sits in the drum at the end of the cycle and the machine stops with a full tub.
Usually: Nine times out of ten the pump filter is packed solid with coins, hair grips, buttons and lint, or the pump impeller is jammed by a wire that has worked its way out of an underwired bra.
On the visit: We empty the machine down through the filter hose, clear the filter and free the impeller, then check the pump actually runs and draws current before moving on to the sump hose and the standpipe under the sink.
A puddle under the machine, or water tracking across the kitchen floor while it fills or spins.
Usually: The usual sources are a perished door seal, a split sump hose, a weeping pump housing, a clip that has lost its grip on the outlet, or a detergent drawer overflowing because the dispenser is caked up.
On the visit: We run a short cycle with the panels off and watch where the water first appears rather than where it ends up, because a leak at the top of the machine will happily pool at the bottom and mislead everybody.
A rumble or aircraft-like roar that builds through the spin, sometimes with grey marks appearing on the washing.
Usually: Worn drum bearings, though a coin or a stray wire trapped between the drum and the outer tub makes a very similar noise, so the two are worth separating before anything is condemned.
On the visit: We rock the drum at the twelve and six o'clock positions to feel for play and listen with the belt off. Bearings are one of the more expensive repairs and on a sealed tub they are often not worth doing, so we give you the honest answer before you commit.
The wash has ended, or the machine has stopped part-way through, and the door will not release.
Usually: Most commonly a failed door interlock, but a machine that still believes there is water in the tub will hold the door shut deliberately, so a drain fault can present exactly the same way.
On the visit: We drain the machine down through the filter first, release the door without damaging the trim or the surrounding panel, and then test the interlock properly instead of assuming it is the culprit and fitting one blind.
The machine runs for a few minutes, then the kitchen goes dead and the trip in the hallway has flicked off.
Usually: Usually a heating element that has broken down to earth and trips the moment it energises. A soaked or failed mains suppressor, motor or pump can produce the same behaviour, as can water that has found its way into a connector block.
On the visit: We isolate the appliance and test the element, motor and suppressor to earth one at a time so the faulty component can be named with certainty, then replace that component and re-test the machine on a full cycle.
A code on the display, or a set pattern of flashing lights, and the programme stops before it finishes.
Usually: A code narrows the search but rarely names the part. A drain code very often means a blocked filter rather than a dead pump, and a heating code is as likely to be the temperature sensor or a scaled-up pressure system as the element itself.
On the visit: We read the code, then verify it against the actual component with a meter before ordering anything, because fitting parts on the strength of a code alone is how people end up paying for the same repair twice.
