Appliance repairs in Ealing W5

Ealing is the district where a repair visit is most likely to run long, and the reason is the kitchens rather than the traffic. The big Victorian and Edwardian houses on the streets around Walpole Park and up towards Pitshanger Lane have very often had a bespoke kitchen fitted, and in those kitchens the washing machine, dishwasher, fridge and freezer are built into the run behind matching decor doors rather than standing out on show. We meet a higher proportion of premium integrated machines in W5 than anywhere else we cover, and an integrated machine is a different job from a freestanding one. The decor door has to come off its brackets, the plinth has to lift out, the appliance is usually screwed to the underside of the worktop or to the sides of its housing, and it then has to be walked forward on a floor protector without marking timber or stone. None of that is difficult, but it is all time, and it happens before any fault-finding starts. Many of the same houses have been divided into flats, and there the kitchen tends to be the old back room, a scullery or a slice of a wide landing, with a slimline machine wedged into whatever depth was left over. Nearer Ealing Broadway station and Haven Green the mansion blocks bring their own routine: an entryphone that needs answering, a communal stair that a full-size appliance will not go up without warning, and a lift that in the older blocks will not take a machine lying flat. Tell us your floor and how the front door opens, and the visit starts in your kitchen instead of on the pavement. Parking is tight and controlled across most of the district, from the streets behind the Broadway to the roads either side of Ealing Common and down towards South Ealing station, so it helps to know whether your bay is permit-only, pay-by-phone, suspended or nothing at all; often the van ends up a few minutes back and the toolbag comes in on foot. Two practical notes before we arrive. Clear the cupboard under the sink and about a metre of floor in front of the appliance. And this is a hard water part of London, so in Ealing we take out scaled heating elements and furred dishwasher spray arms far more often than we replace control boards. The run down from our Northolt base is a short one, though you will always get a time window rather than a promised arrival.

Frequently asked questions

My appliances are all built into a bespoke fitted kitchen. Does that change the visit?

It changes how long it takes rather than what can be done. In an Ealing fitted kitchen the decor door comes off its brackets, the plinth lifts out and the machine is usually screwed to the worktop or to its housing before it will move at all, so allow extra time. If the fitter sealed the worktop down onto the casing, or a floor was laid up against the feet, please say so when you book.

I am in a mansion block near Haven Green. What do you need for access?

Your floor, whether there is a working lift, and how the front door is opened: entryphone, fob, code, or a caretaker who has to be found first. Several of the older blocks around Ealing Broadway station have a lift that will not take a full-size appliance lying flat, and a communal stair is not something a washing machine goes up unannounced, so we would rather plan that with you than discover it on the day.

Parking around Ealing is controlled almost everywhere. Does that cause you a problem?

Not usually, but it is worth a word when you book. Let us know whether your street is permit-only, pay-by-phone, or has a visitor permit you can issue. Around Ealing Common, Pitshanger Lane and the streets behind the Broadway the van often ends up a few minutes away and the tools come in by hand, which is fine as long as you know why nobody is standing at the door yet.

My kitchen is in a converted flat in one of the big old houses. Is a slimline machine harder to work on?

Not harder, just tighter. In these conversions the kitchen is often the old scullery or part of a landing, and the machine has been squeezed into a gap with the waste and feed taken the long way round behind a unit. It still has to come fully forward before the pump filter, the hoses and the rear panel can be reached, so about a metre of clear floor in front of it makes a real difference.

What does a visit to Ealing cost, and is an integrated job charged differently?

The call-out charge is £80 per visit, and it is the same whether the machine is freestanding or built into a fitted run. Labour is included on most repairs; more extensive or complex work needs additional labour, which is quoted and agreed with you before it starts. Parts are charged on top and always quoted before fitting, and the specific part repaired or replaced carries a three-month guarantee, not a whole-appliance warranty.
