Washer dryer repair in Ealing W5

Three hours in and the load is still damp. That is the washer dryer call we take most often in this district, and the housing explains it before the appliance does. When a large Victorian or Edwardian house is carved into flats, the kitchen ends up being whichever room could take a sink and a waste, and there is space in it for one machine rather than two. So a single drum, a single pump and one set of controls are asked to do both jobs, and it is the drying half that gives out first. More on washer dryer repair across West London and Harrow.

Much of the time nothing has actually broken. Every combined machine is rated to dry a good deal less than it can wash, often around half, and that figure lives in the book rather than on the front panel. A full wash load left in the drum and sent straight on to dry has been handed a job the machine was never built to finish. It runs, and runs, and gives back warm damp washing, and the owner reasonably concludes the drying side has failed. Splitting the load and drying it in halves is not us fobbing you off. It is the difference between a cycle that ends and one that never does.

Where there is a real fault it usually sits in the condensing side. These machines dry by running cold water down a channel at the back of the drum to strip the moisture out of hot air, and the supply round here is hard enough to fur that channel steadily until it barely works. Lint bound into the scale makes it worse. After that we look at the heater and its thermal protection, the fan, the sensor that decides when the load is dry, and the drain path, because a machine that cannot shift its condensate will stop drying while still washing perfectly well.

Some of these visits end in a candid conversation. One appliance doing two jobs works twice as hard as either a washer or a dryer would, so if the bearings are rumbling as well as the drying being poor, we will tell you what both repairs involve rather than fix one and let you find the other next month. Electric domestic appliances are all we handle. You pay £80 for the visit, most repair labour sits inside that figure, longer jobs are quoted and agreed with you before they begin, parts are priced before fitting, and there are three months on whatever we put in.

What Ealing kitchens throw at us

In the flats carved out of the big houses backing onto Walpole Park the washer dryer is the only laundry appliance in the property, and it is expected to keep up with an entire household from one drum. Those kitchens are narrow enough that the machine comes out into the doorway before the back panel can come off, so it is worth clearing the run of floor between the appliance and the hall before we knock.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the washer dryer in our Ealing flat conversion take hours and still hand back damp washing?

Most often the load is simply too big for the drying rating, which on a combined machine is well under the wash capacity. Dry in halves and the cycle will usually finish properly. If it still will not, we look at the condenser channel, the heater and its thermal protection, the fan and the sensor that decides the load is dry.

Does the hard water in W5 affect the drying side of a washer dryer as well as the wash?

It does, and that surprises people. The drying half condenses moisture by running cold mains water down a channel behind the drum, so every drying cycle leaves a little chalk in exactly the place the machine needs to stay clear. Scale mixed with lint narrows that channel until drying performance falls away, and clearing it properly is a strip-and-soak job rather than a wipe.

3-month guarantee on the part we replace. Any part we replace is guaranteed for 3 months from the date it is fitted. This covers the replaced part only — it is not a warranty on the whole appliance.
