How these kitchens are built changes how a machine comes out of them. Where the worktop is stone, nobody has screwed the appliance up into the underside of it, so it is held by brackets to the cabinets on either side, and those fixings often sit behind the end of the plinth or under a scribed filler panel. The decor door is heavy, hung to line up with the doors beside it, and it goes back on exactly as it came off or the whole run looks wrong. Some of these kitchens raise the machine into a tall housing at counter height, which is easier on the back and harder on the plumbing, because the waste is routed high and any sag in that hose holds water.
All of which matters, because most of what fails sits at the two ends of the appliance. Not draining is usually the filter, the drain pump or the waste connection at the sink rather than anything electronic, and we have pulled fruit stones, glass chips and grit out of enough impellers to look there first. Not filling points at the inlet valve and its strainer, which fur up quickly in water this hard. Cloudy glassware comes down to salt, the hardness setting and blocked spray arm jets. A perished door seal announces itself as water on the floor in front of the plinth rather than inside the cabinet.
We would sooner tell you a machine is not worth the parts than take it apart to prove the point, and with a dishwasher that conversation generally turns on whether the trouble is the pump and the seals or the electronics behind them. Our integrated dishwasher sits under a stone worktop in an Ealing kitchen — how do you get it out to work on it?
Carefully, and from the sides rather than the top. Under stone the machine is bracketed to the neighbouring cabinets, so we take the decor door off its brackets, lift or unclip the plinth, find those side fixings and draw the appliance forward while keeping an eye on the waste hose and the cold feed behind it. Everything goes back to the same alignment afterwards.
We have a water softener plumbed into our Ealing kitchen — does the dishwasher still need salt and a hardness setting?
If the softened supply genuinely feeds the machine, you can lower the hardness setting and you will use far less salt, but do not assume it does. Plenty of installations soften the hot supply only, or a bathroom branch, while the dishwasher takes untreated cold water. We check what is actually reaching the machine and set it to match, which is usually the simplest improvement available to a dishwasher here.
