Hanwell is one of the shorter runs south from our Northolt base, although the Uxbridge Road end of it can crawl, so we give you a time window rather than a promise to the minute. The housing here tells you most of what a repair visit will involve before we even knock. W7 is largely Victorian and Edwardian terraces, and around Hanwell Clock Tower the frontages are protected, which means the original proportions have survived: a narrow hall, a tight turn at the foot of the stairs, and doorways that were never sized for a modern 60cm washing machine. One last local point: this part of West London sits in a hard water area, and scale causes more faults than people expect. It furs up washing machine and dishwasher heating elements, so a machine fills and turns but never gets properly warm. It blocks dishwasher spray arms, so glasses come out gritty and the inside of the door goes chalky.
