Fridge freezer repair in Hanwell W7

This is the one appliance where what you do the evening before genuinely decides whether the visit finishes in a single trip. More on fridge freezer repair across West London and Harrow.

Start with the food. Most of our Hanwell work on these machines is the warm-fridge, cold-freezer fault, and getting behind that means taking the rear panel out from inside the fridge compartment — so the shelves, the salad drawer and everything standing on them have to come out regardless. Frozen food is safer left in a shut freezer for the length of a visit than moved onto a warm worktop, so leave that side packed unless we tell you otherwise. If the machine turns out to need a proper defrost, a cool bag or an obliging neighbour beats the kitchen counter every time.

Then the space, which in a W7 terrace is the real constraint. The appliance is usually wedged into an alcove or the end of a side-return run with a cupboard built above it, and it has to come forward: a metre of clear floor in front, and the bin, the kettle and the recycling moved somewhere else first. Put a towel down. An iced evaporator drips the moment the panel is loose, and a blocked drain hole releases whatever has been pooling under the salad drawer. Switch off at the socket if you can reach it — and if the socket sits behind the appliance, say so when you book, because it means the isolation point is not reachable from the front and we plan the start of the job differently.

With all that done the diagnosis moves quickly. A warm fridge sitting over a perfectly cold freezer normally means cold air is no longer travelling between the two compartments: the evaporator behind the rear panel has iced solid, or the fan pushing air across it has seized, or the defrost heater or its sensor has failed and let frost build until the path closed up. A puddle under the salad drawer points at a blocked drain hole and clears in minutes. Tired door seals let warm air in and make everything else labour, and cost little to renew. Cooling circuits are specialist work we do not take on, and we will say so rather than guess — but fan, defrost and airflow faults are the great majority of what actually fails. Coming out is £80, labour on most repairs sits inside that, larger jobs are agreed before starting, parts are quoted before fitting, and the part we replace carries a three-month guarantee.

What Hanwell kitchens throw at us

In the Hanwell terraces the fridge freezer usually stands in an alcove at the end of a side-return kitchen with a cupboard fitted directly above it, so the machine must be walked forward before the rear panel inside the fridge can be lifted out. If you are on one of the permit-parked turnings near Brent Lodge Park, a metre of cleared floor and a towel by the appliance will save more of the visit than anything else you could prepare, because a defrost job starts dripping the moment that panel is loose.

Frequently asked questions

Should we empty the freezer before you come to a Hanwell terrace to look at a warm fridge?

Usually not. A closed freezer holds its temperature for the length of a normal visit, and the food is safer in there than out on a worktop. What does need emptying is the fridge side — shelves, salad drawer and contents — because the iced evaporator lives behind the rear panel inside that compartment. If a full defrost turns out to be needed we will tell you on the spot and you can sort a cool bag then.

Our fridge freezer is boxed into an alcove in a W7 side-return kitchen — does it have to come out?

It has to come forward, not out of the room. We walk the machine far enough clear to open the back of the fridge compartment and reach the fan and the defrost parts, then walk it back afterwards. A metre of cleared floor in front is enough for that. Do tell us when booking if the socket sits behind the appliance, because an isolation point you cannot reach from the front changes how we begin.

3-month guarantee on the part we replace. Any part we replace is guaranteed for 3 months from the date it is fitted. This covers the replaced part only — it is not a warranty on the whole appliance.
