Locked doors. Of everything we are called to on washing machines in this district, the one that comes up out of all proportion to the rest of the patch is the door that will not release once the cycle has ended. The load sits there clean and soaking, the drum has gone quiet, and the handle has no give in it whatsoever. That is not because Ealing is hard on door handles. So the first thing to establish is whether there is still water lying in the tub. Plenty of locked doors are not lock faults at all. No control will permit an opening while the pressure system reports a level above the door line, and if the pump is jammed or the filter has silted up with coins, hairgrips and a felt of lint, the machine is holding on to the load to keep your floor dry. Clear the drainage path and the door often gives up on its own. Where it does not, we go to the lock assembly, its wiring and the alignment of the catch — and alignment is worth taking seriously on a fitted machine, because a heavy decor door hung on the front will pull the appliance door out of square over a couple of years.

Getting to any of it takes longer here than people expect, which is better said at the booking than at the kitchen door. A bespoke fitted run does not give a machine up easily: the decor door comes off its adjustable brackets, the plinth lifts, and under a solid stone top the appliance is usually bracketed to the cabinets either side instead of screwed up underneath. Hoses and cable are often dressed short, so it can only come forward so far before something is under tension. We take that part slowly. A scuffed hand-painted door is a more expensive mistake than any pump.
