It shows in the glasses first. A grey film that comes off with a wipe of citric acid is scale, and that is fixable. Next it shows in the spray arms, where the jets fur closed one at a time until only part of the load is being washed and the plates on the bottom basket come out with food still on them. Most of it comes back to salt. Nearly every machine we open around here has an empty reservoir, and nearly every owner tells us they use all-in-one tablets so they assumed they did not need it. In water this hard the softener unit still has to regenerate, and the machine still has to be set for the local hardness, or the tablets are fighting a battle they will lose. Filling it and setting it correctly takes minutes and we would rather show you than come back to it.
The mechanical faults follow from the same cause. Flakes of scale and grit work into the drain pump and jam the impeller, so the machine will not empty and sits with dirty water lying over the filter. A furred strainer on the inlet side means it will not fill, or fills so slowly the programme gives up. A door seal hardens, loses its spring and lets water track down the front of the cabinet. All of it is ordinary work: strip, clean, descale, and replace only what has genuinely failed. Do I still need dishwasher salt in Northolt if I use all-in-one tablets?
In water as hard as ours, yes. All-in-one tablets carry a softening agent, but they cannot regenerate the resin in the machine's own softener unit, and that unit needs salt to do it. Keep the reservoir topped up and make sure the hardness setting matches the local supply. It is the simplest thing you can do to keep the heater and the spray jets alive.
My dishwasher was squeezed into a base unit space in an older Northolt semi — does that make it harder to repair?
