Start with the model number. On a freestanding electric cooker the plate carrying it usually sits on the edge of the oven door frame, behind the storage drawer, or on the back panel. Photograph it and read it out when you book, and we can tell you whether the selector switch, element or hinge set is already on the van. Then work out precisely what still works. An oven that is dead while the hotplates carry on as normal is genuinely useful information: it says the supply into the cooker is intact and points us at the oven element, its thermostat or a worn selector. Everything dead at once points somewhere else entirely, so check whether the cooker switch above the worktop is actually on and whether a trip has gone.
Test the grill before we come, and every position on the selector, because a switch worn internally will often give you two functions out of six and the pattern of which ones survive tells us a great deal. If the controls have simply stopped responding, note whether a lock symbol is showing in the display. And if there is any smell of scorching, or brown marks around where the cable enters at the back, say that when you book rather than when we arrive. A scorched terminal block is the one fault on this appliance we would much rather know about in advance.
Last, the practical part, which matters more here than people expect. Empty the oven, take the shelves out, clear the worktop either side and move the bin, because a freestanding cooker has to come forward on its feet before anyone can reach the terminal block or drop the back panel off. Floors in the back kitchens around here are vinyl or old tile that scuffs easily, so we lay board down, and a clear run makes that quick rather than fiddly.
