Dishwasher repair in South Harrow HA2

Nothing about a kitchen drawn in the nineteen-thirties allowed for a dishwasher, and it shows in almost every one we are called to here. The machine went in later, into a run of units that was already full, and where it ended up decides most of how the visit goes. More on dishwasher repair across West London and Harrow.

Three arrangements cover the bulk of HA2. Commonest is a slimline machine dropped into the gap left by taking out a single base unit, because a full-width one was never going to fit the run. Then come the refitted kitchens, where the dishwasher hides behind a door matched to the cupboards, hung on brackets under the worktop with a plinth across the bottom and, occasionally, a sealed-down worktop above it. In the flats over the parades it is more often freestanding, standing at the end of the worktop next to the sink with its hoses looped behind, or a counter-top model teed off the tap. Each one takes a different five minutes to open up, which is worth knowing before anybody starts moving crockery.

Where the machine sits also decides which faults arrive. A dishwasher fitted at the far end of the run from the sink has a long waste hose holding a lot of standing water, and that hose is the first thing we look at on a machine that will not empty, often before the drain pump itself, although a jammed impeller with a shard of glass or a fruit stone in it is common enough. Not filling is usually a furred inlet strainer rather than a dead valve. The supply around here is hard enough that spray arm jets close up one at a time until only half the load is being washed, and the salt reservoir is nearly always dry because the household was told all-in-one tablets covered everything.

Cloudy glasses deserve separating out, because there are two kinds. A film that comes off with a wipe of something acidic is scale, and that is fixable. A dullness that will not shift has etched into the glass itself, and no repair, additive or programme brings it back, so we tell you that rather than take money for trying. A door seal gone hard and letting water track down the front of the cabinet is the other end of the scale: a small part and an ordinary hour's work. Our £80 covers the trip and the diagnosis, with labour on ordinary repairs inside it. Anything more involved is priced and agreed first, and whatever we replace is guaranteed for three months on that part.

What South Harrow kitchens throw at us

In the semis around Roxeth and on the streets running off Northolt Road, the dishwasher has usually been squeezed into a slimline gap where a base unit once stood, at the far end of the run from the sink. That long waste hose is the first thing we check when one of them will not empty. In the flats over the parade the machine is more often freestanding beside the sink, which makes for a quicker job but leaves the hoses looped behind the cabinet where they kink.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my slimline dishwasher in a South Harrow kitchen keep leaving dirty water in the bottom?

Start with the filter and the waste hose rather than the machine. These retro-fits often sit at the far end of the units from the sink, so the hose run is long, shallow and full of standing water that silts up with grease. If that is clear, the next suspects are a jammed drain pump impeller, usually with glass or a fruit stone in it, and the spigot on the sink trap the hose was teed into.

Can you reach the pump on a dishwasher integrated behind a matching door in a refitted HA2 kitchen?

In almost every case, yes. The decor door and its brackets come off, the plinth lifts away, and the machine walks forward on its front feet with the hoses and cable following it out. We put protection down on the floor before it moves. The one situation we will not force is a worktop that has been sealed down over the top of the machine, and we would tell you what removing it involves rather than start levering.

3-month guarantee on the part we replace. Any part we replace is guaranteed for 3 months from the date it is fitted. This covers the replaced part only — it is not a warranty on the whole appliance.
