The cleaning function is the first of them. Plenty of ovens now ask you to pour water into a dish in the cavity floor and run a short steam programme to soften the grease off the enamel. With a supply this hard, what builds after a few dozen of those cycles is a chalky crust round the base that owners often mistake for the enamel itself breaking up. On the models with a proper water tank and a small pump behind the cavity, the line and the boiler fur up until the steam side stops working altogether, and the descale reminder gets cleared without anybody descaling anything. That is generally the state it reaches us in.
The door is the second. Each time the oven cools, condensation runs down the inner pane, and everything dissolved in that water stays behind as it dries. Wipe it away with a tap-wet cloth and you simply add to the deposit. What you end up with is a white haze between the panes that no cleaner will touch, because it has settled on a face you cannot get to without splitting the door apart. That is a job rather than a wipe, and it is worth knowing before you scrub. Third is the seal: deposits work into the rubber, it stiffens and loses its spring, it stops meeting the frame square, heat escapes along the top edge, and the element and thermostat then work longer for the same tray of food.
Beneath all that sit the ordinary faults, and they are still the ones we fix most. A fan turning with no heat behind it is a failed element and a straightforward change. An element earthing out as it warms, tripping the kitchen and taking the sockets with it, is the same part and the same afternoon. A thermostat drifted far enough that everything takes half as long again. Hinges dropped so the door sits proud of the frame. A clock that has quietly locked the oven out and needs setting rather than replacing, which is the one fault we would sooner talk you through on the phone than charge you to watch us do.
