Dishwasher repair in Harrow HA1
Boil a kettle twice in Harrow and look inside it. That chalky bloom is the same water your dishwasher has been drinking for years, and a dishwasher takes far more of it, at far higher temperatures, than a kettle ever does. Hard water sits somewhere in the history of nearly every dishwasher fault we attend in HA1, even when what you are describing on the phone sounds purely mechanical. More on dishwasher repair across West London and Harrow.
Begin with the component nobody thinks about. Most machines carry a built-in softener with a resin chamber and a salt reservoir, and a hardness setting that ought to have been turned up when the appliance went in. In a district with water like this, very often it was not: the setting still sits where it left the factory, and the reservoir has been dry since the first bag of salt ran out. Scale takes it from there. It furs the heating element, narrows the spray arm jets until the upper basket stops being properly rinsed, stiffens the drain pump and lays a dull grey film over the whole load.
Which brings us to cloudy glassware, the complaint misdiagnosed more than any other. There are two kinds and they need separating at your sink, not over the phone. If the haze lifts with a drop of vinegar on a cloth, it is limescale and detergent film, and salt, rinse aid and the right hardness setting will deal with it. If the haze stays put, the surface of the glass has been etched, which is permanent, and no part and no repair will bring it back. We would sooner say that standing next to you than sell you something that cannot work.
The mechanical faults trace back to the same supply. A drain pump seized on grit and a shred of soaked label. A machine not draining because the filter stack and sump have never once been lifted out. A machine not filling because the inlet valve screen has silted up behind the tap. A door seal gone hard and brittle, letting water track down the cupboard front. Slimline integrated machines in the town-centre flats hide all of that behind a decor door, so time gets allowed for unbolting and drawing the appliance out before any judgement is made. On money: £80 for the visit, labour on ordinary repairs included, a price you agree to for anything more involved, and three months on any part we fit.

What Harrow kitchens throw at us
Water reaching kitchens around College Road and the town centre is hard, and it does its work inside a dishwasher long before anyone notices it on a tap. In the fitted kitchens of the purpose-built flats the machine is usually a slimline integrated one behind a decor door, so the salt reservoir stays out of sight and out of mind and the hardness dial generally sits exactly where the installer left it. Freestanding machines in the older Harrow houses drink the same water but are far quicker to get at when the sump wants lifting.
What you can rely on
Frequently asked questions
Does the hard water in Harrow really damage a dishwasher, or is the salt reservoir just for show?
It is not for show. The softener strips hardness out of the fill before it reaches the element and the spray arms, and once the salt runs out that protection stops. Scale then builds on the heater, in the jets and through the drain pump. Keeping the reservoir topped up and the hardness setting matched to the supply here prevents a decent share of the faults we are called to.
Our dishwasher in HA1 leaves glasses hazy even on the hottest programme — can that be repaired?
It depends which haze you have. Rub one with a little vinegar on a cloth: if it clears, the deposit is limescale and detergent film and the machine can be brought back with salt, rinse aid and the correct hardness setting, plus a proper clean of the jets. If nothing changes, the glass itself is etched, that damage is permanent, and we will tell you so rather than fit parts.
3-month guarantee on the part we replace. Any part we replace is guaranteed for 3 months from the date it is fitted. This covers the replaced part only — it is not a warranty on the whole appliance.
