In the semis and the estate houses it is straightforward for everyone. The streets are wide, there is normally somewhere off-street to pull the van in, and the front door is a few paces from it. The kitchen sits at the back, so there is a hallway to walk a toolbag down, but once we are in there the machine is freestanding and can be drawn right out onto the floor and, if the pump or the condenser channel has to come out, laid over on a blanket. Nothing needs dismantling to reach it and nothing needs carrying anywhere.
The newer flats are the other job. When you book, tell us the entrance and the buzzer, because block numbering around there does not always run in the order you would guess, and say whether there is a lift or two flights of stairs. Inside, the kitchen is compact and fitted, the machine is under the worktop behind a decor door, and the hall is often too narrow to swing it. We may ask to walk the machine out into the living space to get behind it, which is normal, and we lay something down under it first. If a heavy part has to go back to the van and come in again we will tell you what that adds to the visit rather than let it be a surprise.
The fault itself is nearly always on the drying side. One drum and one pump are doing two jobs, so a machine that washes perfectly can still run a drying cycle for hours and hand you back a damp load. Usually the condenser channel has scaled and furred up so the moist air and the cooling water never meet properly, and clearing it out is the repair. Sometimes the heater, the fan or a sensor has failed instead. Sometimes nothing has: the dry load on these machines is smaller than the wash load, and a full wash left in to dry will not dry, whatever the programme claims. We say so when that is the answer, and the £80 for the visit still applies, so it is worth trying a half load before you ring. Anything we do replace is covered for three months on that part.
