Tumble dryer repair in Northolt UB5

Ask where the dryer stands and half the fault list has already gone. Northolt gives three answers, and each one fails in its own way. More on tumble dryer repair across West London and Harrow.

In the interwar semis the dryer is usually freestanding, either beside the washing machine in the back kitchen or stacked on top of it. Stacked is fine where a proper bracket kit has been used. More often there is no kit, the machine has walked forward over the years, and the vent hose behind it is crushed flat against the wall. A vented dryer in that state will run and run without drying, and the heater keeps cutting out on temperature because the hot, wet air has nowhere to go. Put the same machine in a cold rear extension or a lean-to and a condenser model struggles for a different reason again: it needs air at room temperature to condense against, and a cold room means cycle after cycle that never finishes.

On the estate houses the dryer is more often built under a worktop in a run of units. That looks tidy and it strangles the machine. The air it pulls in is the air it has just dumped out, lint works past a filter nobody empties often enough and packs itself into the condenser block, and the thermal cut-out above the element trips to protect everything downstream. People reset it, get one decent cycle, and it trips again. That is not a faulty cut-out. That is the cut-out doing exactly the job it exists for, because something in front of it is blocked.

In the newer flats the dryer is integrated behind a decor door, which stacks a third restriction on top of the second. The work is much the same wherever it lives. Door off, machine out, condenser drawn and washed through, fluff cleared from the fan housing and the ducting, and the moisture sensor bars inside the drum wiped back to bare metal, because a film of softener residue across them tells the machine a wet load is dry and ends the cycle early. Where the element, the thermostat or the cut-out has genuinely failed we carry the common ones on the van. It is £80 for the visit with labour included on most repairs, parts are priced and agreed before they go in, and the part we fit is covered for three months.

What Northolt kitchens throw at us

A lot of the dryers we see in Northolt are stacked on the washing machine in a back kitchen off Northolt Village Green, which is where the hose behind them gets flattened against the wall. Out towards Northala Fields the dryer more often ends up in an unheated rear extension, and a condenser machine in a cold room there will chew through cycle after cycle without ever finishing a load.

Frequently asked questions

My tumble dryer is stacked on the washing machine in a Northolt back kitchen — will you work on it up there?

We will. If a proper bracket kit is holding it we work on it in place where the fault allows, and where it does not we bring it down onto the floor and put it back afterwards. If it is sitting up there on nothing but its own feet we will say so, because a machine that walks forward on a spin is how the vent hose behind it gets crushed in the first place.

Why does my condenser dryer take three cycles to dry a load in a cold Northolt rear extension?

A condenser dryer works by cooling its own moist air against the air of the room, and a cold, unheated extension throws that off badly. Before assuming a fault, it is worth running a load with the door to the house open. If it still will not dry, the fault is usually a lint-clogged condenser, a tired heater or moisture sensor bars filmed over with softener, and all three are ordinary repairs.

3-month guarantee on the part we replace. Any part we replace is guaranteed for 3 months from the date it is fitted. This covers the replaced part only — it is not a warranty on the whole appliance.
