Fridge freezer repair in Harrow HA1

Across the rest of our patch, fridge freezer work spreads itself fairly evenly across the fault list. In HA1 it does not. One pattern turns up here far more than anywhere else we cover: a fridge compartment drifting warm while the freezer beneath stays rock solid, caused by an evaporator that has iced into a block behind the rear panel. That is no coincidence, and the reason lies in how the kitchens here are put together. More on fridge freezer repair across West London and Harrow.

The purpose-built blocks in the town centre have fitted kitchens with integrated appliances, and an integrated fridge freezer lives inside a cupboard carcass behind a decor door. It breathes through a slot in the plinth and a duct running up the back of the housing. That path gathers dust, and in a small warm flat kitchen it is frequently half-blocked by whatever has been pushed in alongside the unit. The machine then runs longer and harder to hold its temperature, the automatic defrost cannot keep up with the frost forming on the evaporator, and the airflow feeding the fridge compartment closes off. The freezer, sitting right beside the cold, notices nothing whatever. The fridge goes warm, and the milk breaks the news.

Putting it right is methodical rather than clever. The freezer is emptied, the rear panel comes away, the ice is thawed properly instead of chipped at, and then the real question gets answered: an evaporator fan seized on its bearing, a defrost heater or its sensor failed open, or a drain hole packed solid so meltwater runs forward and puddles beneath the salad drawer rather than going where it should. Thaw a machine and hand it back without settling that question and you will be looking at the same appliance again in a few months.

Two things are worth having ready. Somewhere to park the frozen food for an hour or two, whether that is a cool box or a friendly freezer next door, and a couple of old towels, since thawing ice produces water and a fitted kitchen floor will not enjoy it. Door seals belong in the same conversation, because a tired seal on an integrated machine is hidden behind the decor door where nobody watches it go, and you notice it instead as an appliance that barely stops running and frost that returns a few days after every defrost. Seals are among the more satisfying parts to fit. £80 is the visit charge, with the work on routine repairs inside it, anything more involved priced first, and three months of cover on whatever part we fit.

What Harrow kitchens throw at us

In the purpose-built blocks near Lowlands Recreation Ground the fridge freezer is integrated behind a decor door, breathing through a plinth slot and a duct at the back of the carcass, and that is exactly the installation that ices an evaporator up. The Victorian villas and the West Harrow houses take freestanding machines with air on every side, and they hand us a noticeably different fault list. Which of the two you have is the first thing we ask about whenever somebody in HA1 rings about a warm fridge.

Frequently asked questions

Our integrated fridge freezer in a Harrow town-centre flat has a warm fridge and a cold freezer — what is going on?

Almost certainly a frozen evaporator. Cold air for the fridge is blown forward from the freezer side, and once frost has closed that path the fridge section warms while the freezer carries on perfectly. Behind a decor door the ventilation is often restricted too, which makes it worse. We thaw it, then find out whether the fan, the defrost heater, the sensor or a blocked drain caused it.

Do we need to empty the freezer before you visit an HA1 flat to defrost an iced-up fridge freezer?

Yes please, and it makes a real difference to the visit. The rear panel inside the freezer has to come out and the ice thawed thoroughly, which is impossible around packed food. Have a cool box or a neighbour's freezer lined up for an hour or two and a few old towels down, and we can spend the time diagnosing the cause rather than unpacking drawers.

3-month guarantee on the part we replace. Any part we replace is guaranteed for 3 months from the date it is fitted. This covers the replaced part only — it is not a warranty on the whole appliance.
