Washer dryer repair in Hillingdon UB10

Of every washer dryer complaint that reaches us, one arrives from this district far out of proportion to the number of machines in it: the thing washes perfectly well and then dries next to nothing. Two reasons sit behind that, and both are local. The first is load size. Bigger kitchens and bigger households mean the drum goes in filled to its wash capacity, and on virtually every washer dryer built the dry capacity is around half of the wash capacity. A drum packed to the wash figure cannot tumble, the clothes travel round as one mass instead of separating, and warm air never reaches the middle of it. More on washer dryer repair across West London and Harrow.

The second reason is the water. A condenser washer dryer disposes of steam by running cold water down a channel behind the tub, turning that steam back into water and pumping it away using the same pump that empties the wash. The channel and its jet fur up in water this hard exactly as a kettle does. Once they are scaled the steam stops condensing, humidity inside the drum climbs instead of falling, the machine keeps extending itself looking for a reading it will never get, and you have the cycle that runs half a day and finishes with a hot, damp load.

So the strip-down follows that order. The condenser channel and its jet get cleared and descaled properly rather than flushed and hoped over. The sump, the filter and the pump come next, because one pump doing two entirely different jobs is the biggest design compromise in these machines and it fails in ways a washing-machine-only pump does not. Only then do the drying heater, the thermostats and the airflow through the fan get tested as suspects rather than assumed as culprits. Where the machine is built in behind a matching door, we also look at whether that cabinet is letting it breathe at all.

Sometimes the honest answer is that nothing is broken. If a full wash load is going in and a full dry load is expected out, no part we could fit would change that, and you will be told so at the kitchen door rather than sold a heater. Where there is a real fault, £80 covers the visit and the diagnosis, anything replaced is quoted and agreed with you beforehand, and that part comes with three months' cover on it.

What Hillingdon kitchens throw at us

Utility spaces are far commoner out here than elsewhere on our patch, so a washer dryer in a Hillingdon house is often the second machine rather than the only one, tucked into a run of units near the back door where nobody ever stands and watches a cycle. That is exactly where a scaled condenser hides for months. In the older Ickenham village kitchens the washer dryer is more often the only machine in a small original kitchen, worked every day, and there the same scaling shows itself much sooner.

Frequently asked questions

Why do so many washer dryers around Hillingdon wash perfectly but barely dry?

Two local reasons stack up. Households here run big loads, and the dry capacity of a washer dryer is roughly half its wash capacity, so a packed drum cannot tumble and the middle of the load never sees warm air. On top of that, the hard water out this way scales the condenser channel that is supposed to turn the steam back into water.

Our washer dryer is built in behind a matching door in a UB10 kitchen. Does that make the drying worse?

It can. A drying cycle throws out a lot of heat, and a machine sealed into a cabinet with a decor door on the front and no gap at the plinth recirculates warm air instead of shedding it. We check the cabinet ventilation as part of the visit, because there is no point fitting a heater into a machine that is being slowly cooked by its own housing.

3-month guarantee on the part we replace. Any part we replace is guaranteed for 3 months from the date it is fitted. This covers the replaced part only — it is not a warranty on the whole appliance.
