Tumble dryer repair in Hillingdon UB10

If we had to name the one fault this district generates more than any other, it would be the dryer that has stopped heating, usually after the thermal cut-out has tripped for the second or third time. That is not bad luck with a particular make. It is what happens when a dryer is given somewhere out of the way to live, which is something most homes here can offer and most homes in the denser districts cannot. More on tumble dryer repair across West London and Harrow.

A machine in a utility room, a back lobby or a garage gets pushed all the way back against the wall, because there is a wall to push it against and nobody wants to look at it. On a vented dryer that folds the hose flat behind the machine, and a crushed hose is a restriction the dryer has no way of seeing. On a condenser dryer the intake and the condenser block sit low at the front, and out of sight means the fluff filter gets emptied when somebody remembers rather than after every load. Either way the airflow falls, the heater cannot shed its heat into moving air, and the thermal cut-out does precisely what it exists to do. The drum keeps turning, the programme keeps running, and the load comes out cold and heavy.

Which is why fitting a fresh cut-out on its own is a repair with a very short life. The condenser block and its housing get cleared out properly, the fluff comes out of the ducting and the fan chamber, the hose run is straightened or replaced, and the machine is pulled forward far enough to give it back the clearance it needs. Only after all of that do the heater, the thermostats and the cut-out itself get tested. If the restriction is still in place when we leave, the new part trips again inside a fortnight and neither of us wants that second visit.

The other one worth knowing about is the moisture sensor. Two metal bars inside the drum read how wet the load is, and fabric conditioner mixed with the mineral content of the water out here films them over. The machine then reads dry when the load is soaking, or keeps running when it is finished, and taking three cycles to dry one wash is the result. Cleaning those bars is a five-minute job you can do yourself with a cloth and a little vinegar. Where it turns out to be more than that, the call-out is £80, any part is quoted before it is fitted, and there is a three-month guarantee on the part that goes in.

What Hillingdon kitchens throw at us

In the semi-detached and detached houses out towards Ickenham village the dryer normally lives in a garage or a utility off the kitchen rather than in the kitchen itself. In winter an unheated garage genuinely lengthens a cycle, which masks a real heating fault for weeks before anybody rings us about it. We ask which of the two you have when you book, partly because it changes the conversation and partly because a garage install means we need the up-and-over door open when we arrive.

Frequently asked questions

Our tumble dryer lives in the garage of a Hillingdon house. Does the cold make it worse?

It lengthens cycles rather than breaking anything, and that is the trap. A cold garage makes a slow dryer look normal for a whole winter, so a genuine airflow or heating fault goes unreported until the cut-out trips. Garage machines also tend to be shoved hard against the wall, which is the commonest cause of the restriction in the first place.

The thermal cut-out on our UB10 dryer has tripped twice now. Is replacing it enough?

On its own, no. A cut-out that has tripped repeatedly is reporting a real restriction somewhere in the airflow, usually a lint-packed condenser, a blocked fan chamber or a vent hose crushed flat behind the machine. We clear all of that first and fit the part second, because a new cut-out into an unchanged airflow path simply trips again within a couple of weeks.

3-month guarantee on the part we replace. Any part we replace is guaranteed for 3 months from the date it is fitted. This covers the replaced part only — it is not a warranty on the whole appliance.
