Tumble dryer repair in South Harrow HA2

There are two kinds of front door in this district, and they make for two quite different afternoons. More on tumble dryer repair across West London and Harrow.

On the residential streets behind the parades it could hardly be simpler. The van goes on the kerb, the door is a few paces from it, and a hall runs through to a kitchen at the back where the dryer stands beside the washing machine or in the narrow utility space off it. Nothing is carried far, nothing has to be dismantled to get in, and the machine can be drawn out onto the floor and worked on properly. Those visits run to time.

Above the shopping parades the picture changes. The entrance is usually a slim door set between two shopfronts, the stairs go up in one steep flight, there is no lift, and the buzzer panel does not always follow the order the flat numbers suggest. Give us the door and the bell when you book and it saves ten minutes on the pavement. The good news, and it is specific to this appliance, is that virtually everything worth doing to a dryer gets done where it stands: the condenser block draws out of the front, the lid and facia come off, the fan housing and the ducting are cleared in place, and the drum can be lifted without the machine leaving the room. A dryer only comes down those stairs when it is going for good, and we say plainly when that is where it is heading rather than letting you find out in stages.

What we find at the top of the stairs is much what we find in the back kitchens. Lint packed so densely into the condenser that the machine is breathing its own exhaust. A vent hose crushed flat behind a dryer that has been shoved back into a shallow recess, so the hot wet air has nowhere to go and the heat keeps shutting down on temperature. A thermal cut-out that goes again a cycle after somebody reset it, which is not a faulty cut-out at all but the symptom of something choked upstream of it. Moisture sensor bars inside the drum filmed over with softener residue, quietly telling the machine that a soaking load is dry and ending the programme early. And the plain not heating, which usually comes back to the element or the thermostat sitting behind it, both of which we carry for the common models. Attending costs £80 with labour on most repairs included, parts are quoted before they are fitted, and there are three months on the part itself.

What South Harrow kitchens throw at us

A good share of our dryer work in South Harrow is in flats over the shopping parades, reached by a narrow street door and one steep flight with no lift, which is why we ask for the entrance and the bell number at the point of booking. The rest is in the semis on the streets behind, where the van sits at the kerb and the dryer lives in a utility space off the back kitchen. A dryer is one of the few appliances we can strip and clear entirely where it stands, so the stairs rarely change the outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Can you repair a tumble dryer in a flat above the South Harrow shops when there is no lift?

Yes, and in nearly every case the machine stays where it is. The condenser, the fan housing, the ducting, the element and the thermostat are all reached from the front and the back of the dryer in the room it sits in. What helps is telling us the street door and the bell number when you book, so the right kit comes up the stairs on the first trip instead of the second.

My tumble dryer is in a small utility space off the kitchen in HA2 and takes three cycles to dry — why?

A dryer in a tight, unventilated space ends up recycling its own hot damp air, and if it is a vented model the hose behind it has probably been crushed against the wall when the machine was pushed back. Add a lint-clogged condenser or filter and the heat keeps cutting out on temperature. We clear the airway end to end and check the sensor bars before condemning any part.

3-month guarantee on the part we replace. Any part we replace is guaranteed for 3 months from the date it is fitted. This covers the replaced part only — it is not a warranty on the whole appliance.
