Hob repair in Yeading UB4
If we are called to a hob in Yeading, the odds are strong that it is one zone dead and the rest of the top behaving itself. More on hob repair across West London and Harrow.
The reason lies in how kitchens here have been updated. Most of these houses were built with a freestanding cooker in mind, and somewhere along the line the kitchen was refitted with a worktop hob dropped into a cut-out above a built-under oven. Two things follow. The zone nearest the front is the one that takes the big pan, and this is a district of family cooking, where a heavy pan of rice or curry can sit on the same ring on full power for an hour at a stretch. And the cut-out is usually tight, because it was cut to fit the hole rather than to the clearances printed in the manual, so heat that should escape hangs around underneath instead.
Under the glass that shows up as a failed radiant element, or a burnt connector where the element tails meet the loom, or on induction as a coil or a section of board that has spent years running hotter than the designer intended. Where every zone is dead at once the fault is normally further back — the supply, the isolator above the worktop, or the main board. Where a hob keeps cutting out part way through cooking it is very often nothing more than a cooling vent choked with dust and grease under the worktop, which is a satisfying job because it costs almost nothing to put right.
Two things are worth ruling out before you even book. A child lock will make an entire hob look dead, and it gets switched on by accident far more often than a component actually fails; the manual will give you the key combination to clear it. And on induction the pan is half the appliance. If a pan base is not magnetic the zone simply will not light, and a pan much smaller than the ring may not be detected at all, so a new induction hob and an old set of pans is a common false alarm. Cracked glass is the one we cannot usually save, because the top is a single piece, and we will tell you honestly whether the part is worth buying.
The call-out is £80, labour on most jobs sits inside that, and any part we fit is covered for three months.

What Yeading kitchens throw at us
Kitchens on the Yeading estates have mostly been refitted at some point with a worktop hob over a built-under oven, cut into the surface to fit the hole rather than to the clearance the manual asks for. Add the big pans that come with family cooking around Willow Tree Lane and Hayes End, sitting on one zone for an hour at a time, and a single dead ring becomes the call we take most often in this district. The cooling vent under that cut-out is worth a look before anything else gets condemned.
What you can rely on
Frequently asked questions
One ring on our Yeading hob has stopped working — does the whole hob need replacing?
Usually not. A single dead zone on a ceramic hob is most often a failed radiant element or a burnt connector underneath the glass, and both can be replaced without disturbing the rest of the top. On induction it is more likely a coil or a section of the board. The one fault we cannot help with is cracked glass, because the surface is a single piece and on many models that part costs more than the hob is worth.
We had an induction hob fitted in a UB4 kitchen and half our pans do nothing — is it faulty?
Almost certainly not. Induction only works with a magnetic base, so old aluminium, copper and some stainless pans will sit there doing absolutely nothing, and a pan much smaller than the ring may not be detected either. Hold a fridge magnet against the base: if it grips firmly the pan will work. A child lock left switched on will also make a perfectly good hob look completely dead.
3-month guarantee on the part we replace. Any part we replace is guaranteed for 3 months from the date it is fitted. This covers the replaced part only — it is not a warranty on the whole appliance.
