Hob repair in Norwood Green UB2

How a hob is installed decides most of what happens on the visit, and this district throws up three distinct arrangements. In the interwar semis a fair number of kitchens still run a freestanding cooker with the hotplates on top, so what gets booked as a hob fault is really a cooker fault. Where those same kitchens have been refitted, the hob is built under into a worktop run with a separate oven directly beneath it. In the newer flats it is nearly always a ceramic or induction top dropped into a slim worktop with a drawer or cupboard immediately below. More on hob repair across West London and Harrow.

That third arrangement generates the most calls, because an induction top has to breathe. Its electronics live in a shallow tray under the glass, cooled by a fan pulling air through a narrow slot, and if a drawer stuffed with tea towels sits right beneath, or the installer bedded the hob down on a continuous bead of silicone, the appliance will heat happily for ten minutes and then shut itself off. Owners read that as a dying hob. Far more often it is a blocked cooling path, and putting it right costs nothing but the visit.

The remainder divides neatly. One zone dead on a ceramic top is normally that zone's radiant element or its connection; every zone dead at once points at the supply, the main switch or the control board instead. On induction, a single zone out is usually the coil or its driver board — but a zone that refuses to respond to one particular pan is not a fault at all, because steel works and aluminium or glass does not. Child lock is the most common non-fault we attend: a padlock symbol and a top that ignores every touch is locked, not broken.

Cracked glass is the exception to all of this. A crack, however fine it looks, lets spills down onto live components, and a cracked top has to be replaced rather than mended — we say that immediately instead of charging for exploration. Everything else is diagnosed on the day. The £80 call-out covers the visit and labour on most repairs, anything unusually involved is quoted and agreed with you first, parts are priced before fitting, and the part carries a three-month guarantee.

What Norwood Green kitchens throw at us

Kitchens in the newer flats near Windmill Lane tend to have shallow worktops, which puts an induction hob's cooling slot within a centimetre or two of the back wall with a drawer directly underneath it — the exact recipe for a top that cuts out mid-cook. In the refitted semis off Norwood Road there is usually a built-under oven immediately below the hob, so heat rising from a long roast reaches the hob's own electronics and produces the identical symptom on a perfectly healthy appliance. Knowing which layout you have tells us a lot before the glass is ever lifted.

Frequently asked questions

My induction hob cuts out after ten minutes in a Norwood Green flat — does the whole thing need replacing?

Very probably not. Induction electronics sit in a shallow tray beneath the glass and depend on a fan drawing air through a narrow slot, so a packed drawer below, a top siliconed solid to the worktop, or a hot oven underneath will each cause a thermal cut-out. We check the clearances and the cooling path first, then the fan and the boards. A genuine board failure is considerably rarer than a blocked vent, and much easier to rule out.

We have a freestanding cooker rather than a built-in hob in our UB2 semi — do you still fix the hotplates?

Yes. On a freestanding cooker the hotplates, the selector switches and the wiring behind the control panel all belong to the same appliance, and a dead ring is usually the element or a worn switch. We draw the cooker forward, drop the control panel and test from there. It is the same appointment and the same £80 call-out as a built-in top, and whatever part we fit is covered for three months.

3-month guarantee on the part we replace. Any part we replace is guaranteed for 3 months from the date it is fitted. This covers the replaced part only — it is not a warranty on the whole appliance.
