Hob repair in Southall UB1
A hob is a light appliance to repair and an awkward one to reach, and in UB1 the awkward part is rarely the hob itself. A good share of these calls come from flats on the upper floors above the shops along the Broadway and South Road: a single street door squeezed between two shopfronts, a straight narrow staircase behind it, a buzzer that may or may not be working, and nowhere whatever to stop a van outside. None of that changes the repair. It changes how the repair has to be planned. More on hob repair across West London and Harrow.
So we ask a few questions when you book that sound fussy and are not. Which floor. Whether the buzzer works, and if it does not, which number to ring from the pavement. Whether somebody will definitely be in, because a wasted trip to a locked street door is a call-out charge nobody wanted to spend. And what type of hob it is, because that decides what has to come up the stairs. A ceramic or induction hob drops into the worktop from above and its connection sits underneath, reached by emptying the cupboard or the oven housing below, so most repairs need only a meter, a spares case and hand tools. The exception is a cracked glass top. A replacement panel is bulky, fragile and genuinely difficult on a tight staircase, and we would far rather plan that visit than discover it on the doorstep.
The faults divide up neatly once we are at the worktop. One zone dead is usually the element or its connector on a ceramic hob, or a failed induction module underneath on an induction one. All zones dead, whether the controls are lit or not, points at the supply into the appliance, the control board or the touch panel. Then there are the two that are not faults at all: a child lock left on, which the manual explains and almost nobody has kept hold of; and the wrong pan on induction, where anything that is not properly ferrous simply gets ignored by the zone. We check both of those before we start pricing anything, and if that is all it is, we will tell you so and charge you for the visit rather than for a part.
The last one worth knowing about is overheating. An induction hob pulls cooling air through a vent underneath, usually opening into the cupboard or the oven space below it, and when that gets blocked — by a stored appliance, by packaging, by the oven beneath running hot for hours — the hob cuts out mid-cook and comes back later as though nothing happened. It reads like an intermittent electrical fault and it is nothing of the sort. Whatever the outcome, the visit is £80 as a call-out with labour included for most repairs, anything more involved quoted and agreed beforehand, parts quoted before fitting, and a 3-month guarantee on the part we replace.
£80

Labour is included for most repairs. More extensive or complex jobs may require additional labour, which we always quote and agree with you before starting. Parts are charged separately and always quoted before we fit them.

What Southall kitchens throw at us
Above the shops along the Broadway and towards Southall station, many of the flats are reached by one street door and a steep staircase with no lift, which only really matters for a hob when a cracked glass panel has to be carried up it. In the terraces themselves the hob usually sits in a rear extension worktop with the oven housed directly beneath, so the cooling vent and the connection are both reached from the same cupboard. Telling us the floor and whether the buzzer works stops the visit starting badly.
What you can rely on
Frequently asked questions
We are on the top floor of a flat above a shop on the Broadway in Southall — can you still repair the hob?
Yes. Almost everything a hob repair needs is hand-carried, so stairs are not the obstacle people expect. What we do need is a working buzzer or a phone number to ring from the pavement, somebody in, and to know which floor before we set off. The only job we plan differently is a cracked glass panel, because carrying a replacement top up a narrow staircase takes two people.
Our induction hob in UB1 keeps cutting out mid-cook and then works again later — what causes that?
Nine times out of ten it is the cooling vent underneath being starved of air. Induction electronics sit under the glass and are cooled by a fan drawing through a vent that opens into the cupboard or oven space below, and if that space is packed with stored bits or the oven under it has been running hot, the hob shuts itself down to protect the module and restarts once it has cooled.
3-month guarantee on the part we replace. Any part we replace is guaranteed for 3 months from the date it is fitted. This covers the replaced part only — it is not a warranty on the whole appliance.
