Hob repair in Ruislip HA4
One hob complaint is wildly out of proportion in HA4 compared with the rest of the districts we cover: the hob that behaves impeccably for twenty minutes and then shuts itself down in the middle of cooking. Elsewhere the bread-and-butter call is a single dead radiant zone. Here it is thermal — an induction top cutting its own power because the electronics beneath it have got too hot to carry on. More on hob repair across West London and Harrow.
The reason is the kitchens. Ruislip has a high proportion of induction, because fitted kitchens in these houses were specified rather than inherited, and induction is what tends to go into a specified kitchen. An induction top is not a simple heating element. Each zone sits over a coil driven by a board, and that board lives in a shallow box between the glass and whatever sits underneath, cooled by a small fan pulling air through a slot. Put that assembly directly over a built-under oven in a cut-out sized to the hole rather than to the clearances in the manual, add several years of worktop dust and cooking grease, and the fan is breathing through a blanket. The board hits its limit, the appliance protects itself by switching off, and it does so at the least convenient moment. Clearing the vent path and freeing the fan is frequently the entire repair.
A dead zone happens here too, and on induction that is a coil or the section of board driving it, not an element under the glass. Every zone dead at once points further back, at the supply or the isolator rather than at the appliance. Cracked glass is where we are usually the bearer of bad news, because the top is one piece and the part rarely justifies itself against a replacement.
Two false alarms are worth ruling out before you spend anything. A child lock makes an entire hob look dead and is triggered by a wiped-down worktop far more often than anybody admits, so dig out the manual for the sequence that clears it. And on induction the pan is half the appliance: a base a magnet will not stick to gets no heat whatsoever, and a small pan on a wide zone may never be detected. A new hob with an inherited set of pans is a call we take regularly, and the appliance is innocent every time.
A visit is £80. If a part is needed you hear the figure before we commit to it, and that part is guaranteed for the three months that follow.

What Ruislip kitchens throw at us
Induction is far more common in the big detached houses towards Ruislip Woods than anywhere else on our patch, and it usually sits in a long fitted run directly above a built-under oven. That sandwich is what makes the mid-cook shutdown the signature hob fault of this postcode: the cooling slot beneath the worktop silts up with dust and grease, and the board switches itself off to survive. It also happens to be one of the least costly hob faults to put right, which is worth knowing before anyone in Ruislip orders a replacement.
What you can rely on
Frequently asked questions
Why does our induction hob in Ruislip keep switching itself off part way through cooking?
Almost always heat rather than a failed component. The board under the glass is cooled by a small fan drawing air through a slot, and in a tight cut-out over a built-under oven that slot silts up with dust and grease. Once the board reaches its limit the hob shuts down to protect itself. Clearing the vent path and freeing the fan fixes a good number of these outright.
Our new induction hob in Ruislip ignores half the pans we already own — what is wrong with it?
Nothing, in most cases. Induction only works with a base that a magnet will stick to, so aluminium, copper and some stainless pans simply will not heat however long you leave them there. A pan much narrower than the zone may not be detected either. Test your pans with a fridge magnet before booking, because that costs nothing and settles it either way.
3-month guarantee on the part we replace. Any part we replace is guaranteed for 3 months from the date it is fitted. This covers the replaced part only — it is not a warranty on the whole appliance.
