Hob repair in Alperton HA0

Of everything we work on, the hob is the appliance where the building matters most, and in HA0 that is worth saying up front. A hob does not travel in a toolbag. When the answer turns out to be a new glass top, the part is a large sheet of ceramic in a box, and moving that box from the van to your worktop is a genuine part of the job — through a lift shared with everyone else on your floor, or up a terrace staircase with a turn halfway. More on hob repair across West London and Harrow.

In the tall blocks along the Ealing Road corridor and beside the canal, that means arranging the building before the appliance. The loading bay generally has to be booked, the concierge generally wants notice, and a single lift serving a whole tower is not something anybody should be holding open with a ceramic panel under one arm. We would rather agree a window that suits the building than turn up and be sent round the back. Give us the buzzer arrangement and the lift when you ring, and say if there is a delivery entrance that is not the front door.

In the terraces the stairs stop mattering, because the hob is on the ground floor, and the pinch moves to parking and hallway width. What we ask for inside is identical either way: the worktop cleared on both sides of the hob, and the cupboard or oven housing beneath it emptied. A hob is released from above, but the connection box, the cooling vent and the underside of the glass are all reached from below through that cupboard.

That cupboard also explains one of the faults we see most in the flats. A ceramic or induction hob pulls cooling air through a vent underneath, and in a small fitted kitchen that vent opens into a cupboard packed solid to the back with pans and carrier bags. The hob cooks for twenty minutes, gets hot, shuts itself down, and comes back an hour later looking innocent. One zone dead is normally the element or its connection rather than the entire board. All zones dead points at the supply or the main board. Plenty of calls are neither: a child lock switched on by a passing sleeve, or a pan on an induction top that no magnet will stick to. Cracked glass is the one we cannot fudge, because the glass is the working surface and gets replaced rather than mended. An £80 call-out covers the visit and labour on most repairs, parts are priced before fitting, and the part we replace carries three months.

What Alperton kitchens throw at us

Getting a replacement hob panel into a high-rise flat off Ealing Road is a two-person, one-lift problem, so we sort the loading bay and the concierge notice before anything is ordered. In the older Alperton terraces the panel comes through the front door easily enough and the difficulty moves outside, to finding somewhere legal to leave the van while it does. Either way the cupboard under the hob needs emptying, because that is where the cooling vent and the connection box live.

Frequently asked questions

My block near Alperton station books the lift through a concierge — does that make a hob repair harder?

It makes it slower to arrange rather than harder to carry out, and only when a glass top is involved. Diagnosis needs nothing more than access to the flat. If the panel has to be replaced we come back with it, and that second visit is the one we plan around the lift and the loading bay, so we ask about the concierge arrangement at the point of booking instead of discovering it at the door.

Do you need the kitchen cleared to take a hob out in a small Alperton flat?

Just the working area. Clear the worktop on both sides so there is somewhere to set the panel down, and empty the cupboard or oven housing directly underneath, because the connection box, the cooling fan and the vent are all reached from below. In a compact fitted kitchen that cupboard is usually full to the back, and emptying it before we arrive can take fifteen minutes off the visit.

3-month guarantee on the part we replace. Any part we replace is guaranteed for 3 months from the date it is fitted. This covers the replaced part only — it is not a warranty on the whole appliance.
