Freezer repair across West London and Harrow

A freezer rarely fails all at once. It warns you first: frost creeping across the back wall, drawers that will not slide, an alarm chirping at midnight, or one bag of peas gone soft while everything around it is still solid. The freezers we see within four miles of Northolt fall broadly into two camps. A frost-free upright cools through an evaporator hidden behind the back panel, and a heater, a cut-out and a sensor are meant to melt the frost off that evaporator several times a day; when any one of them stops doing its job the ice builds until it chokes the airflow. Manual defrost uprights and chest freezers have no such circuit, so a little frost is normal — but a seal that has lost its grip, or a lid that no longer sits square, turns a light dusting into a solid slab. Either way the ice matters, because ice is an insulator: it stands between the cold surface and the air it is supposed to be cooling, so the appliance runs longer and longer for the same temperature and you pay for that on the meter. A visit means reading the cabinet temperature with our own probe, taking the back panel off where there is one, looking at how the frost has actually formed, metering the defrost heater, cut-out and sensor, testing the fan, the door switch and the seal, then telling you plainly what the part is and what it will cost before anything is fitted. Faults we see most on a freezer

Frost has built up in a slab across the back wall and the drawers have frozen into their runners.

Usually: On a frost-free upright the defrost heater under the evaporator has gone open circuit, or the thermal cut-out sitting above it has tripped for good, so frost is never melted away during the defrost cycle.

On the visit: We take the back panel off, meter the heater and the cut-out for continuity at the loom connector, clear the evaporator under controlled heat and fit replacements where either reads open.

You defrost the whole freezer by hand, it behaves for a few weeks, then the ice comes straight back.

Usually: The defrost sensor or bimetal is reporting a temperature that stops the cycle ever starting, or the control is simply not calling a defrost.

On the visit: We read the sensor's resistance against its true temperature, force a defrost at the control and watch what actually switches on, then change whichever link in that chain is broken.

The freezer runs almost without stopping, there is condensation round the door and your electricity use has crept up.

Usually: The door seal has hardened, torn or lost its magnetic pull, or the door has dropped on a worn hinge, so warm damp air is drawn in all day and freezes on the coldest surface it finds.

On the visit: We close the door on a strip of paper all round to find where the grip has gone, adjust or replace hinges where the door has sagged, and fit a new seal where the old one will not seat.

The door-open alarm keeps sounding, or the warning light stays on with the door pushed firmly shut.

Usually: Usually the door or lid switch has failed, or a ridge of ice on the seal face is holding the door a millimetre or two proud; sometimes the alarm sensor itself has drifted.

On the visit: We watch the switch as the door swings closed, clear ice off the seal face and the cabinet lip, compare the alarm sensor against our own probe, and replace the switch or sensor once the fault is proven.

The dial or display says the freezer is cold enough, but ice cream is soft and food at the edges of the drawers has gone slack.

Usually: The cabinet sensor or thermostat has drifted out of calibration, or the condenser at the back has matted up with dust and pet hair so the heat cannot shed.

On the visit: We take our own readings at the top and bottom of the cabinet, compare them with what the control believes, clean the condenser and check the clearance behind the appliance, then change the sensor or thermostat where the two disagree.

One drawer or shelf sits far warmer than the rest, or there is a ticking, grinding rattle from the back that stops the moment you open the door.

Usually: The evaporator fan motor has failed, or the blade is striking frost that has built up around it, so cold air is no longer being pushed round the cabinet.

On the visit: We hold the door switch in so the fan runs on test, check the supply arriving at it and whether the blade turns freely once ice is cleared, and fit a replacement motor where the winding is open or the bearing has collapsed.

Water pools in the bottom of a chest freezer, or runs out onto the kitchen floor after a defrost.

Usually: The drain plug at the base has been left out or is not seated properly, or the drain channel is blocked with debris and ice so meltwater has nowhere to go.

On the visit: We clear and flush the drain through, refit or replace the plug so it seals, and check the lid seal, counterbalance and cabinet level, since a lid that will not sit square keeps making the ice that keeps making the water.

  • The frost pattern once the back panel is off — an even dusting, or a slab built up at one end of the evaporator

Frequently asked questions

Why does frost keep coming back in a frost-free freezer?

A frost-free upright is meant to melt the frost off its hidden evaporator several times a day, using a heater, a thermal cut-out and a defrost sensor working together. If one of those has failed, the cooling carries on but the melting stops, so ice builds behind the back panel until it blocks the airflow. Defrosting by hand clears the ice but not the reason it formed, which is why it returns within a few weeks.

Is a frosted-up freezer actually costing me more to run?

Yes, and it is the part that surprises people most. Ice is an insulator, so once it coats the evaporator or the back wall the cold surface can no longer pull heat out of the cabinet properly, and the appliance has to run for far longer to hold the same temperature. A seal that has stopped gripping makes it worse still, because it lets warm damp air in all day to freeze on that same surface. Clear the ice, fix what caused it, and the freezer usually settles back into normal run times within a day.

What does a freezer repair cost?

The door alarm will not stop even though the door is shut — what is that?

Nine times out of ten the door is not shut as far as the appliance thinks it is. A ridge of ice on the seal face or along the cabinet lip holds it a millimetre or two proud, which is plenty for the switch to keep reading open. The other usual causes are a failed door switch and a cabinet sensor that has drifted so far the control treats the reading as a temperature alarm. We test the switch as the door swings closed and check the sensor against our probe before condemning either one.

Should I defrost the freezer and empty it before the visit?

Please leave the ice where it is if you can. The pattern of the frost is the evidence we work from, and a freezer defrosted the night before will often behave for a fortnight and tell us nothing at all. Pulling out the drawers and anything stacked against the back panel does help, and it is worth lining up a cool bag or a neighbour's freezer for the food, because a badly iced evaporator takes time to clear properly and the cabinet stays open while we work.
