A freestanding machine in a galley is wedged rather than installed. There is seldom more than a couple of millimetres either side, the worktop overhangs the top edge, and the supply lands on a terminal block bolted to the wall behind, fed from an outlet plate at skirting height. Nothing at the rear gets touched until the appliance has been walked out on its corners, and here that is the first move rather than the last, because a good number of the faults we are called to live in exactly that spot. A connection that has been running warm for years scorches the plate and browns the insulation around it, and no one ever sees it, because nobody moves a cooker.
The cavity faults sort themselves neatly. An oven stone dead while the hotplates carry on as normal puts the problem in something the oven owns outright — its element, its thermostat, its own contact inside the selector — rather than in anything the two halves share. A grill that has stopped is generally its own element or the switch contact feeding it. Then comes plain wear: twenty years of turning the same knob to the same two positions burns the contacts in a selector, and what you get is controls that answer sometimes, or a plate that only lights if you waggle it. Hinges give up the same way, slowly, until the door hangs off square and the seal no longer meets the frame.
Built-under cookers behind a decor door make up the rest of the work, and on those the door, the brackets and the plinth come away before anything can be tested.
