Siemens sits at the upper end of the same group that produces Bosch and Neff, and anyone who tells you the three are entirely different appliances has not had the lid off many of them. The platforms are largely shared. Open a Siemens washing machine and the drum, the motor, the pump and the heater are frequently the identical components you would find in the Bosch equivalent, with the differences concentrated in the fascia, the programme naming and a touch more sound insulation. That is not a criticism. What Siemens appliances are like to work on

What Siemens does add is finish and control. The iQ tiers push more of the operation into touch panels and software, and the higher up the range you go the more of the appliance is mediated by electronics rather than by a switch you can hear click. In service terms that cuts both ways. Diagnosis is often quicker because the appliance will tell you which circuit it is unhappy with, but the parts that carry that intelligence are the expensive ones, and on some models a replacement module has to be configured to the appliance rather than simply plugged in. We check that before quoting, because it is frequently the difference between a sensible repair and one we would talk you out of.

The recurring jobs are the group's recurring jobs. Washing machines rarely fail on the motor now that brushless drives are standard, so a machine that will not spin is usually telling you about the drain, the door lock or the motor control board. Dishwashers leak quietly into the base tray, lift the anti-flood float and then run the drain pump continuously without ever filling, which looks like a broken pump and is nothing of the kind. Built-in ovens go on hinges, fan elements and temperature sensors, and integrated dryers and washers suffer from being boxed into a cabinet with too little air.

The integrated side deserves a mention of its own, because a lot of Siemens appliances in West London kitchens are built in behind a furniture door. Getting one out safely is a job in itself — the plinth, the worktop fixings and sometimes a scribed panel all have to come apart in the right order, and a rushed extraction damages more kitchens than the fault ever would. We take the time on that, and we put it back properly.

These are appliances that cost real money, the mechanical side is durable, the parts supply is one of the better ones in the trade, and the fault is usually one component rather than a machine at the end of its life. Faults we see most on Siemens appliances

A touch-control panel that responds to some pads and not others, or lights up and then ignores the start button.

Usually: Usually moisture or heat damage to the control panel itself, a failing ribbon connection behind the fascia, or a door switch telling the appliance it is not safe to start rather than any fault in the panel.

On the visit: We check the door circuit and the interconnections first, because a panel is the expensive answer and a door switch is the cheap one, and we would rather rule out the cheap one properly.

The dishwasher will not fill, drains constantly and hums as soon as the door is shut.

Usually: The anti-flood float in the base tray has been raised by water collecting under the machine, so it has locked itself into a protective drain state. The leak is usually the sump seal, a hose joint or the circulation pump housing.

On the visit: We dry the tray, reset the float and then run the appliance with a side panel removed so we can see where the water genuinely arrives from before any part is ordered.

A built-in oven that cooks unevenly, trips the electrics, or has a door that no longer sits flush at the top.

Usually: A fan element breaking down to earth will trip the supply the instant it energises. Uneven cooking is more often a drifting sensor or a dropped hinge letting heat out along the top of the door.

On the visit: We isolate the appliance, test the element and sensor individually, and check the hinges and seal — several oven complaints turn out to be a door that no longer closes squarely.

An integrated washing machine or dryer that is far noisier than it used to be, and walks in its housing on spin.

Usually: Transit bolts left in are the classic on a recent installation. Otherwise it is worn drum bearings, tired suspension legs or a machine that is no longer sitting level on the floor of the cabinet.

On the visit: We level the appliance, check the suspension and rock the drum to feel for bearing play, and give you a straight answer on whether a bearing job is worth doing on that particular model.

The appliance stops mid-programme and shows a code, and switching it off at the wall only buys one more cycle.

Usually: Codes point at a circuit rather than a component. A drain code is more often a restricted sump or filter than a failed pump, and a heating code can be the sensor, the element or a scaled-up pressure system.

On the visit: We read the code, then confirm it with a meter on the actual component. Nothing is ordered on the strength of a code alone, because that is how the same repair gets paid for twice.

The parts that are genuinely Siemens-specific tend to be the fascia, the touch panel and the control module, and those are the expensive ones.

Can you repair a Siemens appliance that is built into the kitchen units?

Yes. A good deal of our work is on integrated appliances, and the removal is often the delicate part of the job rather than the fault itself. Plinths, worktop brackets, furniture doors and scribed end panels all have to come apart in a particular order, and forcing an appliance out of a fitted housing damages more kitchens than the original fault ever would. Is it worth replacing the control module on a Siemens washing machine?

Modules are among the dearer components in any appliance, and on some models the replacement has to be configured to the machine after fitting rather than simply plugged in, which adds work as well as cost.
