What Hisense appliances are like to work on

On the bench the machines are conventional and sensible. Washing machines use an ordinary drain pump and filter, a standard door interlock, a heating element, a pressure sensing arrangement and either a belt-driven motor or an inverter drive depending on the model. Fridge freezers use a normal defrost circuit with a heater and sensor, a fan and a drain channel. Dishwashers use a familiar circulation pump, inlet valve and drain layout, and share the base-tray flood protection that European machines have — the one that locks the appliance into a permanent drain state and gets mistaken for a failed pump. None of it is obscure once the panels are off, and none of it needs brand-specific tooling.

The fault pattern is unremarkable, which on a newer brand is a compliment. Filters block with coins, hair grips and bra wire. Heating elements scale up in the hard water across West London and Harrow and eventually break down to earth, tripping the kitchen at the same point in every wash. Door catches and hinges wear. Fridge freezers frost up when a seal hardens, a drain blocks or the defrost circuit stops clearing. Dryers stop drying because the airway is packed with lint rather than because anything has failed.

The honest qualification is parts depth. Hisense is a younger presence in the British appliance aftermarket than the European names whose components sit on shelves for a decade or more after a model is withdrawn. Common functional items are obtainable, and generic parts cover a fair amount, but model-specific boards, fascias and door assemblies can take longer to arrive, and on an older model the supply can thin out sooner than you would expect from a manufacturer of this size. Our verdict is cautiously positive. A Hisense is worth repairing for the ordinary faults, and those account for most of what actually goes wrong. The build is sound enough that the rest of the machine is usually fine when one component fails, and the repairs are conventional. Where a model-specific electronic assembly is involved, we check we can get it and price it honestly before you commit, because that is where the arithmetic on a value-positioned appliance can stop working. Faults we see most on Hisense appliances

The programme ends with water still standing in the drum and the door locked shut.

Usually: A pump filter choked with coins, buttons, hair grips and lint, or an impeller jammed by a bra wire. A partly blocked standpipe under the sink gives exactly the same symptom.

On the visit: We drain down through the filter hose, clear the filter and free the impeller, confirm the pump draws current, then follow the sump hose and waste pipe before condemning any component.

The electrics trip a few minutes into a wash, reliably at the same stage of every cycle.

Usually: A heating element that has broken down to earth. Hard water in this part of London scales elements, and the failure only shows itself when the machine calls for heat.

On the visit: We isolate the appliance and test element, motor and suppressor to earth one at a time, then fit the failed component and run a full cycle to prove the repair before leaving.

Frost building steadily at the back of the freezer, and a fan noise that changes as the door is opened.

Usually: The defrost circuit has stopped clearing the evaporator — commonly a failed defrost heater or sensor — or a door seal has hardened and is letting warm damp air into the cabinet.

On the visit: We strip the rear panel, clear the ice and test the defrost heater and sensor, then check the seals and the drain path. We do not work on the cooling circuit and will say if that is the fault.

The dishwasher hums, drains continuously and never fills, whichever programme is selected.

Usually: The flood-protection float in the base tray has been lifted by water pooling beneath the machine, so it has locked into a protective drain state. The leak is usually a sump seal or hose joint.

On the visit: We dry the tray, reset the float and run the appliance with a panel removed to find the genuine source of the water before any part is ordered — the pump is nearly always fine.

The machine will not accept a start command even though the door appears to be properly closed.

Usually: The door lock circuit is not confirming closed, usually because a catch or hinge has worn rather than because the interlock itself has failed. Beyond that it points at the control board.

On the visit: We check the catch, hinge and interlock circuit thoroughly before going near the board, then take readings at the module so you are not paying for electronics on a suspicion.

My Hisense fridge freezer is icing up — what causes that?

Usually one of three things, and all are repairable. A door seal that has hardened or distorted lets warm damp air into the cabinet, and that moisture freezes on the coldest surface available. A blocked drain channel makes water pool and refreeze instead of running away to the tray. A failed defrost heater or sensor means the frost is never cleared at all, so it builds until the fan starts striking it. We check the seal and drain first because they cost the least.
