Haier appliance repairs — independent, West London and Harrow

Haier is the parent of Hoover and Candy, and that connection is the most practically useful thing to know about the brand in this country. A good deal of Haier engineering flows down into those two badges, and a good deal of the older Candy and Hoover platform thinking flows back up, so components, layouts and fault patterns cross between the three. On a call-out that means a Haier is rarely an unknown quantity even when the model is unfamiliar: the door hardware, the pump arrangement, the interlock and often the board architecture will look like something we have seen before under a different badge.

call-out charge per visit

Labour is included for most repairs. More extensive or complex jobs may require additional labour, which we always quote and agree with you before starting. Parts are charged separately and always quoted before we fit them.

What Haier appliances are like to work on

The machines themselves are better built than the value end of the group. Haier pushed direct-drive motors down into mainstream price points, so many of their washing machines have no belt and no carbon brushes — the rotor is bolted to the drum and an inverter board drives it. That removes two traditional wear points, and it is one of the reasons these machines tend to run quietly and last well. It also shifts the fault profile. A Haier that will not spin is not telling you about brushes; it is telling you about the rotor position sensor, the door lock circuit, the inverter board, or a drain it quietly gave up on.

The other strand is cold appliances, where Haier has a strong presence including large American-style fridge freezers. The usual calls are frost building behind the rear panel until the fan starts striking it, a compartment running warm while the other is fine, water pooling under a drawer from a blocked drain, or a door seal that has stopped pulling tight. Those are all electrical, mechanical or seal faults and all repairable. We work on that side only, not on the cooling circuit itself, and we will say so straight away if that is where the problem sits.

Parts supply is the honest qualification. It has improved considerably as the brand has grown here and as the group's distribution has consolidated, and common items are obtainable without much trouble, particularly where they cross over with Hoover and Candy. Model-specific electronics can still take longer to arrive than they would for a long-standing European name, and on a discontinued model that can be the deciding factor. We confirm availability before quoting rather than leaving an appliance apart waiting on something uncertain.

Our verdict is positive with that caveat attached. A Haier is generally worth repairing — the mechanical build is sound, direct drive is durable, and most faults are a sensor, a lock, a pump, a valve or a seal rather than the heart of the machine. Where an inverter or main board is involved on an older appliance we cost it openly with you first. We are independent, with no manufacturer relationship of any kind. The visit is £80, which covers the diagnosis and the labour on most repairs, and parts are quoted before we fit them.

Faults we see most on Haier appliances

The machine fills, washes and drains but never gets up to spin speed, leaving the load soaking.

Usually: On a direct-drive Haier there are no brushes and no belt, so the fault sits with the rotor position sensor, the door lock circuit, the inverter board, or a spin abandoned because the drain did not complete.

On the visit: We confirm the drain is clear and the lock is confirming closed, then take readings from the sensor and inverter board so electronics are only fitted when the measurements support it.

Frost packing the back of the freezer compartment, with an intermittent clattering noise from behind the rear panel.

Usually: The defrost circuit is no longer clearing the evaporator, so ice builds until the fan begins striking it. The cause is usually a failed defrost heater or sensor, a tired door seal, or a blocked drain.

On the visit: We strip the rear panel, clear the ice, test the defrost heater and sensor and check the seals and drain path. If the fault is in the cooling circuit we tell you rather than chase it.

The door will not latch firmly, or the machine refuses to start with the door apparently closed.

Usually: Wear in the handle, catch or hinge assembly means the striker no longer engages far enough into the interlock, so the appliance never registers the door as shut and will not begin a cycle.

On the visit: We strip the door, check the handle mechanism, catch and hinge alignment and replace the worn component — the interlock is frequently healthy and does not need to be changed.

Water collecting under the salad drawer of a fridge, or running onto the kitchen floor beneath it.

Usually: The drain channel at the back of the compartment has blocked with debris, so condensate that should run away backs up into the cabinet and eventually over the lip of the drawer.

On the visit: We clear the drain channel and outlet through to the tray, check the door seal still pulls tight along its whole length, and confirm the defrost circuit is behaving before we finish.

The machine stops mid-programme showing a code, and switching it off at the wall buys only one more attempt.

Usually: A code identifies a circuit rather than a component. A drain indication is far more often a restricted filter or sump hose than a failed pump, and a heat indication can be a sensor rather than an element.

On the visit: We read the code and then confirm it with a meter against the actual component before ordering anything, because fitting parts on a code alone is how the same repair gets paid for twice.

Frequently asked questions

Is Haier related to Hoover and Candy?

Yes — Haier is the parent of both brands, and the relationship is a working one rather than just an ownership line on paper. Engineering flows between them, so components, internal layouts and fault patterns cross between the three badges. On a repair that is genuinely useful: a Haier is rarely an unknown quantity even when the model is unfamiliar, because the door hardware, pump arrangement and interlock will usually look like something already seen under a different badge.

Why won't my Haier washing machine spin if it has a direct-drive motor?

Direct drive removes the belt and the carbon brushes, which takes out two of the classic causes but not the symptom. A Haier that will not spin is usually reporting a rotor position sensor, a door lock circuit that is not confirming closed, an inverter board, or a drain it quietly abandoned before the spin stage. We always check the drain and the lock before looking at electronics, because those are the inexpensive answers and they account for a lot of these calls.

Are Haier parts easy to get in the UK?

Better than they used to be, and improving as the brand has grown here and the group's distribution has consolidated. Common items are obtainable without much difficulty, especially where they cross over with Hoover and Candy, which share a good deal with the parent. Model-specific electronics can still take longer to arrive than for a long-standing European name, and on a discontinued model that can decide the job, so we confirm availability before quoting.

Can you repair a large Haier American-style fridge freezer?

Yes, on the electrical and mechanical side, which covers most of what goes wrong with them — defrost heaters and sensors, fans, door seals, blocked drains, water valves and dispenser faults. Frost building behind the rear panel with a clattering fan is one of the most common calls we take on large fridge freezers of any brand, and it is repairable. We do not work on the cooling circuit itself, and if the fault lies there we will tell you at the visit.

Before you book

Have the model and serial details from the rating plate to hand if you can find them — it is usually on the door frame, behind the kick plate or on the back of the appliance. It lets us check the part before we arrive.
