What AEG appliances are like to work on

What AEG adds on top is sensing. Load weighing, automatic dosing, moisture sensing in the dryers and steam functions on the ovens all mean the appliance is constantly measuring something. When a sensor drifts the machine does not usually fail outright; it misbehaves. Cycles run long, a dryer stops with the load still damp because it believes it is dry, or an oven cooks unevenly while the display insists everything is correct. Those are measurement jobs rather than obvious mechanical failures, and they are where taking readings pays for itself.

The mechanical faults are the group's usual ones. Drain pumps choke on coins, buttons and bra wire. Heating elements scale up in the hard water across West London and Harrow until they break down to earth and trip the kitchen. Door interlocks fail. Dishwashers weep into the base tray, lift the anti-flood float and then run the drain pump continuously without filling, which looks like a dead pump and is not. Built-in ovens go on hinges, fan elements, sensors and door seals, and a dropped door that no longer seals along the top produces a complaint that sounds exactly like a failing element.

Faults we see most on AEG appliances

A dryer that runs a full cycle and stops while the load is still noticeably damp, insisting it is finished.

Usually: The moisture sensing has lost its reference — commonly a coating of fabric-conditioner residue on the sensor bars, or a restricted airway that is stopping the machine from reading the load properly.

On the visit: We clean the sensor bars and strip the airway and heat exchanger, then test the sensing circuit, because a machine that cannot measure the load correctly will always finish early.

A washing machine cycle that runs far longer than the display first suggested, and sometimes adds time to itself.

Usually: The machine cannot reach a target it has set — usually a scaled heater, a drifting temperature sensor, or a pressure chamber silted with limescale and detergent so the water level is misread.

On the visit: We clear and test the pressure system and take readings from the heater and sensor, so the cause is measured rather than assumed. A silted pressure chamber is regularly mistaken for a failed switch.

The dishwasher hums, drains without stopping and never takes on any water.

Usually: Water pooling in the base tray has lifted the anti-flood float, so the machine has locked into a protective drain state. The leak is usually the sump seal, a hose joint or the circulation pump housing.

On the visit: We draw the appliance out, dry the tray, reset the float, then run it with a side panel off so the real source of the water is found before any part is ordered.

A built-in oven that browns unevenly, takes longer than it used to, or has a door that no longer sits flush.

Usually: A dropped hinge or a flattened seal letting heat escape along the top of the door is at least as common as the fan element everyone expects, and a drifting temperature sensor produces the same complaint.

On the visit: We check the door, hinges and seal first because they are the inexpensive causes, then measure the sensor and element so the diagnosis rests on readings rather than on the likeliest-sounding answer.

A deep rumbling roar that builds through the spin, with play in the drum when it is rocked by hand.

Usually: Worn drum bearings. On several models in this group the outer tub splits, so the bearings can be pressed out and renewed on their own instead of the whole tub assembly being replaced.

Why does my AEG dryer stop before the clothes are dry?

Because it thinks they are. These dryers measure moisture in the load rather than simply running for a set time, and the sensing depends on clean contact and on air moving freely. Fabric conditioner leaves a film on the sensor bars that insulates them, and a heat exchanger or airway packed with lint prevents the machine reading the load properly. Cleaning the sensors and stripping the airway usually restores normal behaviour without a single part being fitted.

Can you repair an AEG appliance that is built into a fitted kitchen?

Yes, and much of our AEG work is exactly that. The appliance has to come out of its housing before it can be tested properly, which means plinths, fixing brackets, furniture doors and sometimes scribed end panels coming apart in a particular order. Forcing an appliance out of a fitted run causes more damage than the fault ever would, so the extraction is done carefully and the machine is refitted squarely with the door alignment reset afterwards.
