The load never gets past damp, the moisture sensor bars keep asking for more time, and a drying programme that ought to have finished runs on for hours. Owners usually assume the heater has failed. Frequently it has not, and replacing it would have changed nothing.
Scale also shortens the life of components that are not obviously water-handling. Element sheaths. The pressure system. The pump, which on this appliance is doing double duty, shifting wash water on one part of the cycle and condensate on another. Even the door seal, where deposits gather in the folds and hold damp against the rubber.
