In the fitted kitchens of the village and in the newer flats, the dryer is a condenser or a heat-pump machine, frequently stacked above the washing machine or set into the run behind a matching door. Replacing that is not just buying an appliance; it is a fitting job as well, and the machine itself represents proper money. Out in the interwar and post-war houses towards Eastcote and Hatch End there is more often an older vented dryer in a garage, a back lobby or a utility, hose poked through a wall panel or a window vent. That one is cheap to buy and trivial to swap, so the arithmetic runs the other way from the first minute of the visit.
What helps is that the faults are largely shared whichever type you have. Not heating comes down to an element or a thermal cut-out, and a cut-out that has tripped has tripped for a reason. That reason is usually restricted airflow: a lint-clogged condenser, a filter rinsed under the tap for years but never scrubbed free of fabric-softener film, or a vent hose crushed flat where the machine has been shoved back against the plaster. Fit a fresh cut-out without finding the restriction and the same fault reappears within weeks.
Taking three cycles to dry splits into two camps. Sometimes it is airflow again. Sometimes it is the moisture sensor bars inside the drum, filmed over with softener residue so the machine misreads a wet load as dry, or a dry load as wet, and stops or grinds on accordingly. That is a clean and a check rather than a part, which makes it one of the cheerful outcomes.
Where the verdict is replace, you get it plainly. A drum bearing and a motor together on an ageing vented machine, or a fault in the cooling circuit of a heat-pump dryer, is not sensible spending, and we would rather lose the work than take money for it. Where the verdict is repair — an element, a cut-out, a fan, a thermostat, a sensor — the part price comes to you before anything is ordered, and there are three months on that part once fitted. Is it worth repairing a heat-pump tumble dryer built into a fitted Pinner kitchen?

Look at the airflow before anything else. A garage machine collects dust as well as lint, and the hose is nearly always crushed where the dryer has been pushed back against the wall. Clearing that often ends the cutting out entirely. If the cut-out has failed as well it is an inexpensive part, but if the motor or the drum bearings have gone on an old vented machine we would tell you to replace rather than repair.
