Of everything in a kitchen, the fridge freezer is the appliance where simply getting to it accounts for most of the difficulty. Start at the pavement. The village lanes are narrow and busy, so we leave the van a short walk away and carry in, which means the tool bags come in one trip and anything bulky comes in a second. Inside that stock the hallway is narrow with a turn at the foot of the stairs, and the kitchen sits at the back, so the route to the appliance is considerably longer than the room is wide. Water pooling under the salad drawer is a blocked drain hole and among the smallest jobs we do. Tired door seals that no longer grip let warm kitchen air in all day, which is why frost returns within days of every manual defrost.

One request if you can manage it: run the machine down and let it defrost fully first, doors propped, food in a cool box. Ice conceals the very things we need to look at.
