In a fitted kitchen the fridge freezer lives inside a tall housing with a wooden door hung on the front, and that outer door is joined to the appliance door by a pair of sliding brackets. All that moisture has to settle somewhere, and it settles as ice on the evaporator tucked behind the rear panel of the freezer. In normal service a small heater melts that ice off on a regular cycle. Feed it far more moisture than it was designed for, or let the defrost heater or its sensor fail, and the ice wins the argument. It plugs the airway carrying cold air up to the fridge and it locks the evaporator fan, which buzzes, clatters, then stops. The freezer stays cold because the ice is sitting directly on the cold part. The fridge is the compartment left starved.
The repair is unglamorous and it works. Strip the rear panel, clear the ice out properly instead of melting the surface of it, test the heater and its sensor, free or replace the fan, then clear the drain hole that has been quietly puddling water beneath the salad drawer. Last of all, put the door right — realign the sliding brackets, check whether the seals have gone hard and flat, and adjust the housing where it has moved. Skipping that step means the same call again in eighteen months, which helps nobody.
