The fault list underneath is the same wherever the appliance is standing. A fridge gone warm while the freezer stays hard frozen is the classic, and it nearly always means the evaporator behind the rear panel inside the fridge has iced over, so the cold air has nowhere left to travel. That happens because the evaporator fan has seized, or the defrost heater has failed, or the sensor that tells the machine when to defrost has stopped reporting. Water puddling in the salad drawer is a blocked drain hole doing the same thing on a smaller scale. Tired door seals sit underneath a lot of it, since a seal that no longer pulls the door tight draws damp room air in all day and that moisture finishes up as ice.

What the installation changes is how long it takes to reach any of that. Freestanding is the quick one: the unit comes forward, it is emptied, and the rear panel inside the fridge unclips. Built-under is more awkward than it looks, because the worktop is fixed over it and everything has to be done from the front of a short cabinet. Integrated is slowest of all — the decor door and its hinge brackets come off, the appliance is unscrewed from the housing and drawn out into the room, and in a compact new-build kitchen there is often barely enough floor to stand it on, so part of the work gets done with the machine half out and blocked. Two things we will not pretend about. And an integrated unit in a small fitted kitchen sometimes cannot be brought fully clear of its housing, which means some of the work is done at an angle and takes longer.
