Indesit appliance repairs — independent, West London and Harrow

Indesit occupies the value end of the family it shares with Hotpoint, and understanding that relationship saves a lot of wasted time on a call-out. The two badges sit under a common parent, with Whirlpool at the head of the same group, and across much of the range they are built on shared platforms. The drain pump, the door interlock, the heating element, the shock absorbers and often the control board carry the same numbers behind either badge. What separates them is trim, styling, programme naming and the level of finish, not the fundamental engineering. So a fault diagnosed on a Hotpoint tells you where to look on the Indesit, and the parts frequently interchange outright.

What Indesit appliances are like to work on

What that means for you is a very healthy parts supply. Indesit components are among the least expensive and most widely stocked in the trade, they stay obtainable for years after a model has been discontinued, and almost nothing on one of these machines is hard to get hold of. Where the value positioning shows is in the materials rather than the availability: lighter cabinet steel, more plastic in the load-bearing places, thinner sound deadening and, on many washing machines, a sealed outer tub.

The faults are the ones the platform is known for. Carbon brushes on the brushed motors give the classic no-spin, where the machine washes and drains perfectly and then declines to build speed. Door interlocks fail and leave the door locked at the end of the cycle. Drain pumps choke on coins, hair grips and bra wire. Heating elements scale up in the hard water across West London and Harrow until they break down to earth and trip the kitchen at the same moment in every wash. Modules do fail, and on the cheaper models a board can be a disproportionate share of what the machine is worth. Ovens are refreshingly simple to work on — elements, sensors, hinges and seals — and the dishwashers go on the circulation pump, the inlet valve and the drain.

Our verdict is more qualified than it would be on a premium brand, and we would rather say so. For the cheap, quick faults — brushes, a pump, an interlock, an element, a thermostat, a set of hinges — an Indesit is straightforwardly worth repairing, because the part costs little and the job is not long. For drum bearings on a sealed-tub machine, where the whole tub assembly has to be renewed, or for a control module on a budget model, the repair can easily approach what the appliance is worth. That is the point at which we stop, tell you plainly, and let you decide rather than quote you for something we would not do ourselves.

We are independent, with no manufacturer relationship of any kind. The visit is £80, which covers the diagnosis and the labour on most repairs, and any parts are quoted and agreed before they are fitted. If the answer on the day is that the machine is not worth the money, you will hear that from us in your kitchen and not in an invoice afterwards.

Faults we see most on Indesit appliances

The machine completes the wash and drains, but the drum only turns slowly and the load comes out soaking.

Usually: Worn carbon brushes on the brushed motors used across much of the range. On the inverter models there are no brushes, so the same symptom points at the motor control board or an unnoticed drain restriction.

On the visit: We check the machine is genuinely draining, then measure brush length or take readings from the motor and its board so the part that has actually failed is the one we change.

Water sits in the drum at the end of the programme and the door stays locked shut.

Usually: Almost always the pump filter blocked with coins, buttons, hair grips and lint, or an impeller jammed by a bra wire. A machine that thinks it still has water in the tub will hold the door deliberately.

On the visit: We drain the machine down through the filter hose, clear the filter and free the impeller, then confirm the pump draws current before working outwards to the sump hose and the waste pipe.

The electrics trip a few minutes into every cycle, always at the same point in the programme.

Usually: A heating element broken down to earth. Hard water scales elements heavily in this part of London, and the failure shows the instant the machine calls for heat rather than at any other stage.

On the visit: We isolate the appliance and test the element, motor and suppressor to earth one at a time, then fit the failed component and run a full cycle to prove the repair before we leave.

A deepening rumble on spin, sometimes with grey marks appearing on the washing.

Usually: Worn drum bearings — though a coin trapped between the drum and the outer tub makes a very similar noise, so the two are always worth separating before anything is condemned.

On the visit: We rock the drum to feel for play and listen with the belt off. If it is bearings on a sealed-tub model we will tell you honestly that the repair is unlikely to be worth the money.

An oven that will not hold temperature, browns unevenly, or trips the supply when the grill is selected.

Usually: A grill or fan element failing to earth trips the electrics immediately. Uneven cooking without a trip is more often a drifting temperature sensor, a dropped hinge or a door seal that has flattened.

On the visit: We test each element and the sensor separately and check the door closes squarely against a clean seal, so a cheap hinge fault does not get sold as an expensive element fault.

Frequently asked questions

Is an Indesit worth repairing, or is it cheaper to replace?

It genuinely depends on the fault, and this is a brand where we will talk you out of a repair more often than most. Brushes, a drain pump, a door interlock, a heating element, a thermostat or a set of hinges are all cheap parts and quick jobs, and they are clearly worth doing on a machine that is otherwise sound. Bearings on a sealed-tub model, or a control module on a budget machine, can approach what the appliance itself is worth, and we will say so.

Do Indesit and Hotpoint parts fit each other?

Very often they do, because the two badges sit under one parent with Whirlpool at the head of the same family, and share platforms across much of the range. Pumps, door interlocks, heating elements, shock absorbers and frequently control boards carry the same numbers behind either badge. The differences are usually cosmetic — fascia design, programme naming and trim level. It is one of the reasons parts for both brands are so cheap and so easy to find in the aftermarket.

Why does my Indesit washing machine leave the washing soaking wet?

The two usual explanations are a spin that never happened and a drain that never finished. If the machine is on a brushed motor, worn carbon brushes stop it building speed while everything else looks normal, and that is an inexpensive part. If the machine could not clear the water, it abandons the spin deliberately to protect itself, and the real fault is a blocked filter, a jammed impeller or a restricted waste pipe. We check the drain first because it is the cheaper of the two.

Are you connected to Indesit in any way?

Not at all — we are an independent repair business with no manufacturer relationship, no service contract and no badge on the van. Indesit parts are sold openly through the appliance aftermarket and the platforms are well understood in the trade, so nothing about the brand requires a manufacturer connection to diagnose or fix. It also means we have no interest in selling you a replacement appliance, so the verdict you get on the day is the honest one.

Before you book

Have the model and serial details from the rating plate to hand if you can find them — it is usually on the door frame, behind the kick plate or on the back of the appliance. It lets us check the part before we arrive.
