Electrolux appliance repairs — independent, West London and Harrow

Electrolux is the parent name of the group that also produces AEG and Zanussi, and in British kitchens it is the least commonly seen of the three even though it is the one the other two come from. When we do get called to one, the first useful fact is that the platform is shared. A drain pump, a door interlock, a heating element, a pressure switch, a set of carbon brushes or a shock absorber will frequently be the identical component you would fit to a Zanussi or an AEG, with the same number and the same supplier. That is worth knowing because it means an Electrolux is never an orphan on parts, even when the badge is unfamiliar to a counter assistant.

What Electrolux appliances are like to work on

The machines sit between the two siblings in specification: better built than the accessible end of the range, without quite the sound insulation and door hardware of the premium badge. The internal layout is sensible, the wiring is well routed, and access is good enough that a proper diagnosis does not turn into a fight. On several models the outer tub splits, which means drum bearings can be pressed out and renewed individually rather than the whole tub assembly being replaced — a design decision that turns what would be an uneconomic repair on many brands into a job that is genuinely worth doing.

The fault pattern is the group's. Carbon brushes on the older brushed motors produce the classic no-spin, where the machine washes and drains perfectly and simply will not build speed. Drain pumps block with coins, hair grips and bra wire. Heating elements scale up in the hard water across West London and Harrow and eventually break down to earth, tripping the kitchen at the same moment in every cycle. Door interlocks fail and leave the machine either unable to start or unable to release. Dishwashers weep into the base tray, lift the anti-flood float, and then run their drain pump continuously without ever filling — which is protective behaviour, not a pump failure, though it is regularly misdiagnosed as one.

Where Electrolux does add complexity is at the top of the range, with load sensing, automatic dosing and moisture sensing in the dryers. A drifting sensor makes an appliance misbehave rather than fail: cycles that run long, dryers that stop with the load still damp, ovens that cook unevenly while the display insists all is well. Those need measuring rather than guessing at.

Our honest verdict is that Electrolux is well worth repairing. Parts supply through the shared group platform is one of the best in the trade, the mechanical side is durable, most faults are one inexpensive component, and even bearings are frequently viable depending on the tub design. The repair we always cost openly with you is a main control module on an older machine, because that is the one that can tip the balance.

We are independent, with no manufacturer relationship of any kind. The visit is £80, which covers the diagnosis and the labour on most repairs, and parts are quoted and agreed before we fit them.

Faults we see most on Electrolux appliances

The machine washes and drains normally but the drum never reaches spin speed, leaving the load soaking.

Usually: Worn carbon brushes on the brushed motors used through much of the range. On the inverter models there are no brushes, so the same symptom points at the motor control board or an unfinished drain.

On the visit: We confirm the drain is clear, then measure brush length or take readings from the motor and its board, and replace the component that has genuinely failed rather than the easiest to reach.

A rumbling roar that grows through the spin, with obvious play when the drum is rocked by hand.

Usually: Worn drum bearings. A coin trapped between drum and outer tub makes a very similar noise for far less money, so the two are always separated before anything is condemned.

On the visit: We rock the drum, listen with the belt off, and establish whether the tub splits on this model — on the ones that do, the bearings come out individually and the repair is often worth doing.

The dishwasher hums and drains permanently as soon as the door is closed, and takes on no water at all.

Usually: The anti-flood float in the base tray has been lifted by water collecting underneath, so the appliance has locked into a protective state. The leak is usually a sump seal, a hose joint or the pump housing.

On the visit: We dry the tray, reset the float and run the machine with a panel removed so the actual source of the water can be seen before any component is ordered or replaced.

The electrics trip a few minutes into every wash, always at the same point in the programme.

Usually: A heating element that has broken down to earth, which is a regular job here because the hard water scales elements badly and the failure only shows when the machine calls for heat.

On the visit: We isolate the appliance, test element, motor and suppressor to earth one at a time, fit the failed part and then run a complete cycle to prove the repair before leaving the house.

A dryer that runs its full programme and stops with the load still damp, reporting that it has finished.

Usually: The moisture sensing has lost its reference, usually because fabric conditioner has coated the sensor bars or because a lint-packed airway is preventing the machine from reading the load.

On the visit: We clean the sensor bars, strip the filters, heat exchanger and airway end to end, then test the sensing circuit so the machine can measure the load properly again.

Frequently asked questions

Are Electrolux parts hard to find in the UK?

No, and that surprises people because the badge is less common here than its siblings. Electrolux is the parent name of the group that also produces AEG and Zanussi, and the platforms are shared extensively, so pumps, door interlocks, heating elements, pressure switches, brushes and shock absorbers are frequently the same components with the same numbers across all three brands. In practice an Electrolux is never an orphan on parts, and supply through the appliance aftermarket is among the better ones in the trade.

Are Electrolux drum bearings a worthwhile repair?

Frequently, and it depends on the tub. On models where the outer tub splits, the bearings can be pressed out and renewed on their own, which keeps the parts cost low even though the strip-down is a proper job. On sealed-tub models the whole assembly has to be replaced and the arithmetic usually stops working. We establish which type you have on the visit and give you the honest verdict before anything is ordered or any work is started.

Why has my Electrolux washing machine stopped spinning?

On the brushed-motor machines it is most often worn carbon brushes, and the giveaway is that everything else works perfectly — it fills, washes and drains and then simply declines to build speed. Brushes are inexpensive and quick to change. On the inverter machines there are no brushes at all, so the same symptom points at the motor control board, the door lock circuit, or a drain the machine abandoned quietly. We always confirm the drain before looking at electronics.

Do you work on Electrolux appliances independently?

Yes. We are an independent repair business with no manufacturer relationship, no service agreement and no badge on the van. Electrolux parts are sold openly through the appliance aftermarket and the group platform is well documented in the trade, so nothing about the brand requires a manufacturer connection to diagnose or repair. It also means nobody upstream has any interest in you buying a replacement, which is why the verdict you get on the day is a straight one.

Before you book

Have the model and serial details from the rating plate to hand if you can find them — it is usually on the door frame, behind the kick plate or on the back of the appliance. It lets us check the part before we arrive.
